This simple and intuitive app can provide a list of points of interest (POIs), narrate what is nearby, and give detailed routing assistance.  The Goodmaps app can guide visitors to a study room on the third floor, the event space on the fifth floor, and even to a permanent exhibit on the fourth floor where the app will describe D.C.'s incredible history. While this assistive technology primarily helps those with low vision or who are blind, anyone can use it.

Download Goodmaps Explore on the App Store or Google Play. (Please note that there are two Goodmaps apps. To access navigation for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library please download GoodMaps Explore.)

Re: How about "Quiet Hours" for restaurants?

Although I may have missed the initiation of this thread so I could be more certain if it actually has included references to noisy children [Ed. note: It did -- see Message #215845 ], our experience with noise in restaurants is now disturbing, painful, annoying, irritating and vexing almost never because of children but rather because of intentional design and operational factors such as hard reflective surfaces, multiplicity of audio speakers, volume levels way too high for thump, thump, thump obnoxious music on subscription tracks, tables too close together, and lots of other willful and purposeful noise creators and enhancers.

Try asking your server or management to lower the ear-shattering volumes and you might get minimal compliance, if any at all. There appears to be a theme in restaurant development these days that quiet is a condition to be absolutely avoided at all cost, and yes much of the causes of irritation by noise pollution are themselves costly. Apparently, restaurant owners believe that more liquor will be sold in a given period, and turnover of table tops will occur at a faster rate if the patrons are subjected to an elevated target level of noise irritation that newer venues adopt to outdo their older competition.

We have moved our reservation times to earlier and earlier, sometimes the very moment a desired destination starts serving dinner, but if one is tempted to linger in a leisurely fashion and the place begins to fill up, a soft, reserved, peaceful conversation requires increasing effort and stress to continue, so it has gotten to the point that even the trick of coming early is largely futile for any occasion we would like to engage in a gentle or serene meal.

Tranquility has gone the way of the 3 speed stick shift in this age of haste, expedition, and urgency.  Our experience with unacceptable noise is rarely children’ s behavior.

Restaurants should always be quiet. You are not dining alone. You are sharing a space with strangers. If your parents did their job, they would have taught you not to disturb other people—ever. [snip]

This bald eagle was on a low tree branch close to the Potomac, and not bothered by a few bikers and joggers nearby.  When I returned to the spot about an hour later, the eagle had moved on.  In more than 4 decades of riding this trail, it is my first siting of an eagle.

James Baldwin 100th Birthday Celebration at Georgetown Library - Grand Finale 8/1@5:30PM

Please join us in celebrating the remarkable life and enduring legacy of James Baldwin on his 100th Birthday!

In honor of this literary giant and social justice advocate, we will be cutting a special birthday cake to commemorate his contributions to literature, civil rights, and the enduring pursuit of justice and equality.

We will also welcome a special visitor and speaker Deborah Tulani Salahu-Din, Smithsonian researcher in African American Literary History. Her recent projects at the National Museum of African American History and Culture included Chez Baldwin, a digital exhibition that explores the life and works of writer and activist James A. Baldwin through the lens of his house in the South of France. Her talk “Why Baldwin Matters Today”, will underscore two societal values that help frame Baldwin’s life, work, and that illustrate why his thoughts and messages still matter to the nation and world. Two of these values are freedom and identity. The event is scheduled for August 1st at 5:30PM in the Reading Room of Georgetown Neighborhood Library.

We look forward to celebrating James Baldwin's 100th birthday with you!

How does Dan Silverman (a/k/a Prince of Petworth) get news of commercial real estate changes before anyone else?

Let me answer that question with another question: When neighbors in Cleveland Park or Woodley Park see a sign on a storefront that says the business is leaving/someone else is moving in, why do they notify Popville first? Why not the Cleveland Park Listserv?

Playing catch-up -- and giving credit where it's due to the source -- I give you the story:

District Kitchen Abruptly Closed in Woodley Park. However, “in about 30 days a new restaurant will open here…”

Re: ISO Recs for new refrigerator & appliance store

For basic appliances without frills I I have found Home Depot and Best Buy and their delivery/install service to be fine

Other places (eg Bray and Scarff) will often match the prices of big-box stores

I bought one like this a couple years ago and it is good - on sale

Re: A Grover Cleveland Statue for Cleveland Park?

Love the idea of Grover Cleveland sitting on a bench. I used to live in Milton, Delaware where a park had the figure of poet John Milton sitting on a bench. He was usually fitted with a proper topper for different seasons. Fun!

Many posts have recalled statues in different states. I just want to remind neighbors that there are something like 14 wonderful statues at National Harbor, including one of FDR in his wheelchair, one of President Eisenhower in his military uniform, one of Winston Churchill, one of five* military personnel representing five branches of the military (“Team America”) — and even one of Rosie the Riveter. *(We had five military branches before Space Force became our sixth.)
I personally love the idea of a Grover Cleveland statue on the Cleveland Park promenade, and if a search is made for an artist, I hope the search committee can visit “Spirit Park” at National Harbor to admire the statues we have there. In fact, with or without a search, I recommend a visit. Fun!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Why not expand on [the] idea and have Grover Cleveland sitting on one end of a park bench? Great photo opps for everyone:  Zoo traffic.  Birthday party guests, local politicians, prom dates, brides & grooms.  The groom could bring a top hat as a prop to be photographed in.

Makers Union, the relatively new restaurant where Matchbox used to be, is offering a great lunch or dinner there for $25/$40 respectively as part of Black Restaurant Week (through 7/28). Full disclosure: My daughter works there. But that means I've eaten there a number of times and have been happy with the food (and, of course, the service)! They also offer family-style options if you want to go with a larger group. And they just got some new, huge umbrellas that provide great coverage for outdoor dining.
Check them out and help them stake out a permanent footprint in the neighborhood!
