update on my last post asking about facilitation skills needed
Hi facilitators, Thanks to those who participated in the survey I posted here and in a few other places: What facilitation training is needed to help people succeed in the post-pandemic context? I summarized the answers and posted a quick presentation with the highlights here. To note, the top ranked thought was being able to switch from in-person, to hybrid, to online on a dime. That is a lot to ask for no? Thankfully good listening skills also ranked high assuring me that the basics of "process" still hold true despite technology enhancing and complicating things! Have a good evening! Michelle 1.250.231.0635 | michellelaurie.com connect@... -- michellelaurie.com connect@... Strategy-Assessment-Engagement-Faciltation

greatest facilitation skills needed in post-pandemic world
Hi facilitators, This email list was in response to the pandemic as we all shifted to go online during that time. It's been a great community to share ideas and practice with. With the pandemic waning and the opportunity for in person meetings back (yet still a desire to be online or hybrid), I am interested to hear from you what you have found is the greatest challenge for "meeting" that we could be focusing on as facilitators. I've started an online exchange to collect and share and vote on ideas. I'll create a report at the end to share with you. Please consider sharing a few thoughts! As well, if you think this is a conversation worth having, I'm happy to host something in May, drop me a line and I will start a list. Thanks so much, Michelle 1.250.231.0635 | michellelaurie.com connect@... Check out workshop offers for June and July! -- michellelaurie.com connect@... Strategy-Assessment-Engagement-Faciltation

non-profit strategic plans business oriented examples
Hi facilitators, I am going to support a med-sized non-profit economic development org with a 3 year strategic plan. They have about 12 full time staff, 10 board members and their budget is shrinking due to some key programs they used to administer not taking place anymore. They currently have an annual plan (which they updated annually for the past 10 years) which they really like, however it is more of an 'activity plan' for the year (from my perspective). I'm looking for examples of plans from other economic development / not-for-profit that are public or shareable. Or if you have great strategic plan examples to share, that would be excellent as well. I don't have a lot of plans I can share publicly that fit this profile. If you are looking for a more indepth plan, I did this one recently for a multistakeholder partnership (more complex) that took almost a year and is public. Thanks in advance for sharing any examples or links you love and are able to share! Much appreciated, Michelle 1.250.231.0635 | michellelaurie.com connect@... -- michellelaurie.com connect@... Do you use Double Loop Learning/ higher-level learning/Emergent Learning as a framework for your non-profit facilitation work?
Hello Fellow Facilitators, I am looking to connect with facilitators who use any of the following higher-order organizational learning (OL) concepts to inform all or part of their non-profit client work: double loop learning (Argyris & Schon), higher-level learning (Fiol & Lyles), Learning II (Bateson), Emergent Learning (Senge). These concepts would be used in OL, organizational development, change management, leadership development, and transformational learning among other processes. I am not so much seeking training contexts where these are a part of a curriculum, but applications by facilitators that help non-profits with their work. I am aiming to undertake a piece of academic research as a part of my PhD work on organizational learning in NGOs to understand how facilitators use these OL concepts and the results they produce. If you use any of these (e.g. they inform your work, and/or you introduce them to your clients) please send me an email and I can tell you more about the research (which will go forward only if I can find enough facilitators who are using these concepts!) Eventual participation would be through an interview with you and potentially a counterpart in your client organization. The output will be a peer-reviewed journal article which would anonymize all participants (if you want your name attached I can include it in the acknowledgements). with kind regards, Gillian Martin Mehers, CPF-Master (IAF) Bright Green Learning @ Atadore SARL gillian@...

Support workshop for anyone working with groups this spring
Hi all, I'm wondering if this might be useful to folks on this list. Mike Rozinsky and I have a project When & How Studios which supports people in creating rich, participatory experiences for their organisations or communities. This week we’re launching a series of three public online workshops to folks who are working on designing and facilitating gatherings this spring, or wanting to bring participation into a talk or keynote. It provides somewhere to do the actual design work for a real group experience that you're working towards, a peer-support group to enrich your learning and development, and a set of design conversations that you can take with you into the future. We call them the 16 Design Aspects. This is a series of three 90 minute online sessions, running weekly on Tue 25th April, Tue 2nd May and Tue 9th May. See the event page or site for full details, including a 2 min video which explains more. Many thanks, Dan

Facilitation workshops in June and July!
Dear fellow facilitator community, I'm writing in hopes that you can help me spread the word about two workshops I am offering this June and July after a three-year pandemic hiatus! They are related to meeting facilitation, engagement and the use of visuals. I'm excited to announce my annual graphic facilitation workshop - is scheduled for July 13 &14 in Rossland, BC, Canada at the beautiful "slopeside" Josie Hotel. Come join me and make it a retreat! For those that only have one-day or may not be able to travel, I am also offering a NEW HYBRID workshop June 2nd (Engaging Beyond Words) where people can join in-person (in Rossland, BC) or online. Consider this a graphic facilitation light with less focus on large scale graphics and still lots of focus on using visuals to help retain learning. These workshops are for anyone looking to use visual thinking and visual methods to increase engagement in meetings, presentations, reports and so much more! I've attached a couple posters and would very much appreciate you sharing with anyone you know that may be interested in learning about graphic facilitation or visuals to help retain learning! All information including registration is online - michellelaurie.com. Considering joining and thank you so much for helping me spread the LOVE of visuals, drawing on walls and engaging meetings on this Valentine's Day! xo, Michelle 1.250.231.0635 | michellelaurie.com connect@... -- michellelaurie.com connect@... For facilitators: A free Qiqo Pro subscription to you + 2 of your friends 5
Happy December to All! No one likes a sales pitch, so here is a gift pitch! I built something that I'm really excited about and I'm giving it away to everyone on this list. Until December 31st, you can sign up for a free lifetime subscription to Qiqo Pro+ (the regular cost is $22/month so you are saving $264/year). Why use Qiqo Pro? Use it when you want to impress a client by turning a Zoom meeting into something a little more special. You can easily create a splash page for your Zoom meeting; here is my meeting space: https://qiqo.pro/lucas What are the advantages? You can customize the links so that they are easy to remember and add to a calendar invitation. People can go back to the link in their calendar to see the event space and notes (this is a big advantage because participants currently cannot go back to your Zoom meeting to find meeting notes), and you can even use your event spaces for pre-work (asynch brainstorming, co-creating an agenda, etc) before meetings begin and between meetings for regular clients. Where do I sign up? Here is your discount link to get Qiqo Pro+ for free for life: https://qiqo.pro/discount/friend-of-a-friend And the gift to others: The best part is that you are invited to give that link as a gift to either 1 or 2 people between now and the end of the year. If you want to share it with more people (on social media, etc), please instead share the 50% discount link: https://qiqo.pro/discount/earlybird Where do I learn more? Here are a few 3-min YouTube videos to help you set up your event space. Please feel free to ask questions in response to this email or to join me office hours each week for free, live support: https://community.qiqochat.com/events Lucas Cioffi QiqoChat | Lead Software Engineer lucas@... +1.917.528.1831 Live Online Events | Engaging Communities | Real Collaboration Drop in for open office hours!

The Scent of Shame.... #facilitation
Dear all, for the design of an experimental session I am doing research and reaching out, would you please so kind to feed my curiosity ? Inspired by the prompt in ‘The Wonder Journal’ by #HeyAmberRae & #OlafactoryArt Please share your anonymous input through this Google Form When do you feel shame? Either as a member within a group (participant) or as a facilitator (someone in the position of power)? How do you notice when shame is in the room? How does it show up in your and influences others behaviour? What does shame feel like to you, when you are feeling it? Where in your body or mind does shame live? If shame would be a scented candle What would it smell like? Would highly appreciate your anonymous associations here: https://forms.gle/cDB3CLYmnPdzVStV7 Thank you so much in advance! Zoom Webinar tips? 7
Hello folks! I extensively use Zoom Meetings for my online facilitation/tech hosting, and haven't used Zoom Webinar yet. I'll be helping a client with a Zoom Webinar for a specific design + audience that is better suited for the Webinar (e.g. no participatory elements/breakout rooms, or for participants to be on video/microphone). I welcome any tips/things to be aware of/horror stories to learn from! Some context bits that might be helpful to know: We won't be using Zoom's registration process (they have a specific invitation list, it isn't an 'open to the public' event, and we don't need to know who is coming in advance). There will be quite a few "panelists" (in Zoom Webinar-speak) over the course of the event, and some screensharing. There will be no ASL interpretation, but we will use Zoom's automated closed captions. They anticipate up to 200 people, likely fewer. We'll also be recording the session. One of the things that is important to this client is that the webinar is very very easy to join, for both participants and the "panelists". I plan to get the one month Webinar add-on right away so I can play around with it before the live event. Thanks in advance for your wisdom - things you wish you knew before you hosted a Zoom Webinar - including if you'd avoid it entirely! Cheers, Amanda

Immediate interventions for unprepared participants 9
Hi everyone. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea on how to deal with an unprepared participant (e.g., did not do the pre-work) in a meeting? Here's some things I've done already (but need more ideas please!): *Before the meeting:* * emphasize what pre-read/work is required and how much time it will typically take * have a norm regarding prep included in the Agenda *During the meeting:* Do a timeout and meet up with the person to: * name the behaviour (e.g., I'm sensing that you have not read the material, am I reading you right?) * seek to understand (e.g., what's going on?) * paraphrase back what I heard * restate the expectation (e.g., as discussed in your orientation, you are expected to come fully prepared to the meeting) * seek solutions (e.g., what can you do right now to ensure you're ready for at least the next topic?) * acknowledge their solution and act on it Anything else you would recommend?!

ExcelWay lifetime deal on AppSumo #consultants #technology
Hello fellow facilitators! I'm excited to share with you that ExcelWay is now offering a lifetime deal on AppSumo for the next ten days! The tiers start at 59$, and all include unlimited workshops: https://appsumo.8odi.net/c/3550804/1348842/7443 For those who might not be familiar with ExcelWay: it is a visual workshop facilitation software for smooth brainstorming sessions, large virtual events, and most of the product, strategy, and agile workshops. The lifetime deal means that you only pay once and enjoy the software for life. Plus, it comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee. You can find more information and reviews on the AppSumo deal's page, but here are a few points on how it differs from whiteboarding tools (such as Miro, Mural, Jamboard...): It is extremely easy for participants and allows facilitators to quickly onboard those who don't feel comfortable with technology. It includes built-in controls and is excellent for stress-free large events as there can't be any deleting accidents. It is packed with one-of-a-kind features for brainstorming, such as hiding participants' sticky notes to avoid bias, moving sticky notes from one break-out to another in bulk, measuring consensus when voting, and more... It comes with a task and project management system for following up on the next steps decided during the workshops. I hope you will get value from this deal, and my team and I are available for any questions you might have :) All the best, Sophia

What is a simple, collaborative game that online community members would want to play with each other? 7
Hi Everyone, I'm wondering if there is (or could be invented) a game which is both fun to play AND collaborative. This would be a game that could help build a sense of community inside an online community (just like the F4C-Response community we all belong to here on this email list). Many people have probably heard about the online word game called Wordle (recently bought by the NY Times) where a player will try to figure out a 5-letter word with six or fewer guesses. Here's an article which explains some of the game dynamics that make it popular. I've copied some of the key quotes at the far bottom of this email. Here's one key quote from the article:"Wordle isn't just a word game, it's a conversation starter and a chance to show off on social media. That's why it's going viral." With Wordle, all players are figuring out a solution to a challenge individually and then they can share their results. It's definitely fun and lets people brag on social media "Look how fast I solved this one." I think that there is a significant amount of "look at me" / competitiveness when sharing the results, and although some of that is healthy, it's not (in my opinion) the best dynamic to promote within an online community that is intended to be collaborative. So I am wondering if there is or could be something more collaborative, for example everyone in an online community contributing only part of the solution of a shared challenge. I'll offer one example of a collaborative game that seems to meet these criteria. It is based on Wordle, but if you suggest a game, it definitely does not have to be based on Wordle. My suggestion would be to have a full, regular sentence with about 10 words, each of which is its own Wordle puzzle. Any one community member would be allowed to solve a maximum of one of these words each day. When all words are solved, then the sentence is solved. A new sentence would be released once per day if the previous sentence was already solved. I think this changes the dynamic from "look at me" to "look how I solved this word for the community". Does anyone have feedback on this idea or other game suggestions? Thank you! Lucas Cioffi -------------------- Quotes from the article It's just a word game. But it's super popular: Over 300,000 people play it daily, according to The New York Times. That popularity may sound perplexing, but there are a few tiny details that have resulted in everyone going absolutely bonkers for it. There's only one puzzle per day: This creates a certain level of stakes. You only get one shot at the Wordle. If you mess up, you have to wait until tomorrow to get a brand new puzzle. Everyone is playing the exact same puzzle: This is crucial, as it makes it easier to ping your buddy and chat about the day's puzzle. "Today's was tough!" "How did you get on?" "Did you get it?" Which takes us to the next point... It's easy to share your results: Once you've successfully or unsuccessfully done the puzzle for the day, you're invited to share your Wordle journey for the day. If you tweet the image, it looks like this... Note that the word and letters you chose are obscured. All that's shown is your journey toward the word in a series of yellow, green and gray boxes. It's very compelling. If you get it easily, maybe in the second or third try, there's a gloating element whereby you must show your followers how smart you are and share. If you get it by the skin of your teeth in the sixth go, that's also a cool story. But most importantly, the puzzle itself isn't spoiled.

Easier than a whiteboard. Better than a doc. Feedback? 3
Hey everyone – Long-time listener, first-time caller here haha :) You know how when you introduce new tools during a session, it can confuse and overwhelm participants? With some expert facilitators, we recently designed something that makes it effortless to guide participants through brainstorming and decision-making virtually. It's easier and more structured than a "digital whiteboard" and more robust than a doc. Lots of facilitators are using it to increase virtual engagement and participation. And there's no learning curve! Seriously. You can try it at pathspace.com. It's 100% free with no email or signup required. Would love to get feedback. We make changes super quick! What do you like? What could be better? Thanks so much :)

Please help us build a global ecosystem of learning spaces that invite meaningful connection and conversation
Hello friends, just wanted to share a major project that I've been working on here to ask for your support. Seven years ago, my wife and I started working on a learning platform designed around meaningful connection and conversation. Today, Sutra ( https://www.sutra.co ) has supported over 30,000 participating in group experiences. The heart of our work is about creating spaces that invite presence and shared awareness. Our vision is a new kind of social platform supported by a global ecosystem of amazing space holders in service of transformation. We’re now running a crowdfunding campaign with a prayer that our community will help us take the next step on this journey. We're running a crowdfunding campaign at the moment and the best way to understand our work is to watch the 5 minute campaign video at the top of the page: http://www.supportsutra.co If this speaks to you, please consider supporting our effort. One of the biggest ways you can support us is by sharing this campaign with your own networks. Thank you so much!
