Hello Steve, We are having difficulties here with email as our laptop will not communicate with BTmail. All our group addresses are held on the BT system, that includes the addresses of " Clifton maritime mobile" which means now we cannot circulate the group. The last mail sent on Suzanne's tablet using her Gmail a/c when we had type in all the addresses individually this took ages. I am sending this to you so that you maybe able to circulate those members who are on the G3GHN reflector. Since our QSO on 20m we have been surrounded by icebergs in fact as type this several hundred bergs are visible most large enough to do serious damage to the ship. Hence we are weaving through this 'ice field'. Two of our ports of call have been cancelled . Colin (G0UĴK) emailed me to say although he saw me on me on the RBN he could not hear me. Poor conditions and being located in deep mountainous fjords are probably the reason. Saying that, we have had the occasional good contact, namely into Japan and UK and the USA. We saw some medium to small “growlers” this morning float past the ship. Icing has now caused us to change our next port of call from Qaqortoq to Paamiut. So no radio contacts and very few stations heard. However, the WX conditions allowed us to get the bikes out go for a 25mile ride along the coast, superb scenery, amazing vistas of snow covered peaks. Today and tomorrow we are at sea on the way to our next port of Qaqortoq (OX). The weather today is particularly unpleasant driving rain, thick mist and the temperature hovering round 8c. Not ideal for operating on the open deck. After saying we would be on 18Mhz we consequently found that the loading coil for 18Mhz has gone off song, we think it is due the ingress of water. In the short term this will stop our access to 18Mhz. Annoyingly we use both the 14Mhz and the 18Mhz coils in series to resonate our antenna on 10Mhz………So we are experimenting with some different combinations of coils and lengths of elements trying a resonate the G-whip on 10Mhz. All this requires spending time out in the open on deck 12 and at present the current WX precludes this. As a result, we now only have access to 10,12,15 and 20m. This morning we only managed a couple of contacts on 20m one in CW to DL and second in SSB to G-land. Before the WX drove to shelter inside. We will keep you appraised as to progress but the bands appear to very unstable with extremes of QSB……….Therefore no fixed skeds yet. Sri folks - i was qrv as listed on g3ghn but inv L antenna inexplicably went unstable ( was working ok on 40m that morning and also ok since - big mystery!) Did hear weak q on the frequency but guess these were not Cliftons- no matter folks will try again next year probably this time with a revamped 80m g5rv! For interest - the annual KW radio revival weekend is sat 6/sun 7 jan ( 9 till 4pm and son of G8KW himself might be qrv from Eltham scout hall) . Hello fellow Cliftonaires, Just to let you know the Clifton pre-Christmas seasonal net was held at 1400GMT today (17/12) on 7.195Mhz. This frequency was suggested by Lawrie (G4FAA) which turned out to be ideal for inter-G. Such that Steve M0BPQ came straight back to my first tentative call at 13.55hrs……..Conditions were such that the band was generally noise free and the reports were 59+ both ways…………..Due to technical issues at home Steve had made the journey to Gilwell Park to operate in an unheated scout hut. Needless to say we had quite a deal of catching up to do since our last QSO when I was /MM. We kept frequency warm for just under an hour, awaiting the arrival of other Clifton members, unfortunately this was not to be. Before the net I received a phone-call from John Lambert (G3FNZ) giving his apologies for not being able to join the net. However, he did ask that I pass on his best wishes for the Christmas and the New Year to all those present. Many thanks John.! Have a great Christmas and happy New Year! Whatho fellow Cliftonaires! Having read a recent post by Lawrie (G4FAA) regarding a ‘Festive net’ over the Christmas period. I thought I would send my ‘apologies’ as however much Suzanne and I would like to join in the merry throng. Both the memsahib and I will be somewhere off the coast of Scandinavia Due to the prevailing WX in that part of world we will not be taking our radio-kit as it is far too cold to operate outside on the open deck…….Ice boots and crampons will be the order of the day Hi! We have another nautical adventure on the horizon navigating in much warmer climes, when radio and bikes will be de-rigueur. Information will be circulated via our mailing list once we embark.
