A general note on how JMRI is released
#admin
ADMIN: Copied from a post by Bob Jacobson This looks like a good moment to describe the thinking behind JMRI’s releases more generally. Twice a year, we create something called a “production” release. These have names like 4.16, 4.18, etc. These are the ones that we encourage people to use, particularly new users, because they’re a good balance of new features and annoying bugs (new and unfixed) Any development process can create bugs; sometime even properly-working new features are considered bugs by some users! So how do we get from “new code” to “production release”? *) About once a month we create a “test” release. These have names like 4.17.1, 4.17.2, etc leading up to 4.18; after that, a new series starts with 4.19.1, 4.19.2, leading to the next production release. These have new features, like “rotation of Layout Editor”. We encourage as many people as possible to download these and _test_ them, so that new problems can be found ASAP. The test release process doesn’t work unless people do that. Generally, all the small numbered test releases are made with all the contributed changes up to that point; they’re meant to be inclusive. Toward the end of the sequence, though, the risk-reward ratio changes: We don’t want to introduce a new bug in the last test release before a production release. Partly that’s because the test process isn’t perfect; partly that’s because such big changes can often wait a little bit anyway. People working on new features and fixes really do try to not break things. We’ve got lots of automated and manual testing in place. But JMRI is large, complicated, and has lots of interacting features: We need users to check things to make sure that JMRI still works for _them_. So it’s very helpful for people to install and check a test release or two between production releases. At a minimum, we request that people download and use a new production release once a year or so: The further behind a layout is, the bigger the step forward when it has to be updated, and the more likely that unexpected issues will arise. If that happens at the same time as a new computer, or a change to the layout, or multiple issues are present, then it can be really complicated and time-consuming to resolve. *) Between test releases, during that month of accumulation, there are “development” release available. These are called names like 4.17.1-ish, 4.17.2-ish, and they’re built several times a day if changes have been made. They are truly the latest and greatest. A few hours after a change is made, it can be gotten from one of those (the change mentioned here has already been built into these: http://builds.jmri.org/jenkins/job/TestReleases/job/development/) People can download and install these to check new features of interest to them. If problems are found and reported, the whole process moves along even better. ADMIN: >>HOW TO ASK YOUR QUESTION<< - A general reminder for everyone
#admin
====================== HOW to ask your question ====================== One of the most common questions about JMRI is "How do I get it to work?". This isn't really a problem with JMRI itself in most cases, but there are HUGE numbers of possible configurations for DCC systems, and Windows, Linux, and Mac computers out there. Just asking "How do I get it to work" is NOT going to get you any useful help. When asking ANY question, you should >>>utilize a meaningful subject line<<< that indicates the problem and include the following information in the body of the message: + If JMRI has started copy and paste the System Console into the body. (its under help on the start screen) + Has JMRI worked before on this computer? + JMRI version + Previous version if you just upgraded + Java version + Previous version if you just upgraded + Computer make and model + if you have just upgraded, from which version + Any other DCC devices in use + Specific details of your difficulty including error messages if any, or what you would like to do with JMRI. Decoder Programming, Signals, Automation, etc. Depending on the nature of the problem, you may need to supply even more information, but this is the absolute required for anyone to give you accurate answers. Signing you post helps keep the group friendly and personable! Your moderators and trouble shooters.

Please use "meaningful subject lines" when starting topics. We are getting lots of subject lines that don't give much if any idea of what the topic is about. By providing a meaningful subject line you may get the attention of someone that can provide you assistance with your issue. ADMIN: PERMITTED TOPICS - A general reminder for everyone
#admin
We would like to point out that this list is for discussions related to JMRI, and is intended to be a place that people, particularly beginners, can turn to for help with their JMRI problems from more experienced JMRI users. General DCC and model railroading topics should be taken to a more appropriate forum and NOT be posted here. SPAM of any kind, politics, legal issues, and other off-topic matters should NOT be posted to the list and will be subject to deletion by the moderators, as will any responses to such off-topic matters. New members still on moderated status will find that off-topic posts will not be approved for posting, and old members making such posts may find themselves back on moderated status. Bouncing Emails
#admin
In a recent correspondence, I was asked about Bounced(ing) emails. If you are not receiving emails from groups.io you may be bouncing or you may have received an email from gio to reconfirm. Not that group owners and moderators can do nothing to help. Below is copied from the groups.io help pages: https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts/handling-a-bouncing-account Handling a bouncing account When you are receiving group messages by email but group messages cannot be delivered to you for some reason, the nondelivery events are called bounces. Such events put your Groups.io account into a bouncing state that affects all the groups you belong to with that account’s email address. Groups.io tries to notify a bouncing member by sending an email message that has the subject line “Your Groups.io Account is Bouncing.” Also, when a bouncing member logs in to the Groups.io website, a red banner at the top of the page informs them that their account is bouncing. Note: Even if your Groups.io account is bouncing, you can still log in to group websites and read and post messages there. Bouncing affects only email delivery; it does not affect your ability to use group websites. If you have not received an email notification that your account is bouncing but you realize that you have not received any group email messages for a while, you can check your account to see whether group messages are bouncing. For instructions, go to "Setting account preferences and viewing account information" and scroll down to Checking recent email bounces. When your Groups.io account is bouncing, you can try to “unbounce” your account using either of these methods: If you received a “Your Groups.io Account is Bouncing” email notification, click the link in the email to unbounce your account. Go to the Groups.io website (and log in if necessary). In the red banner at the top of the page, click the link to unbounce your account. ! Important: Group owners and moderators cannot do anything to unbounce accounts of their group members. When your account is bouncing, you must address the underlying problem yourself, which might involve contacting your email service provider for assistance or investigation. -- Peter Ulvestad JMRI Users Group Moderator ( https://www.jmri.org ) Tam Valley Group Moderator ( https://tamvalleydepot.com/ ) Sprog-DCC Group Moderator ( http://www.sprog-dcc.co.uk/ ) Edmonton Model Railroad Association ( http://www.emra.club/ )

Throttle Window
3
Ok I got that. I changed the subject line for this email to Throttle Window. I figured out that if you right click on a function Button in the Function window the Properties Window is opened. Remove the contents of the Text option and uncheck the Visible box. Click Apply and Save. The function button no longer appears. Also select the Edit button on the Tool bar at the top of the throttle window. Select Throttle Preferences and then check the box for Hide undefined roster function buttons. At the bottom of the window click Apply and Save. Now the problem I have is getting the Function Window and Address window to keep the size of the window frame I set. Tried several options under File but never got the correct setting. I close the throttle and reopen and the Function window and Address window are way to wide and not what had I just set. I know this is not a big issue, but I like thing to look a certain way. So any help will be appreciated Just a personal note: I had a stroke a few years ago and am now a one finger typer. So if something does not make sense please ask me to clarify. Pi5 active on indicator

#rpi
I’m looking for a way to have an external peripheral active when the Pi5 is on. This way when the Pi power light is green, external circuitry would also power on. As a work around, I am using a USB port power as that sampling indicator. Does anyone have a better idea for an activity monitoring point? Loco runs on only on short address
10
Using DecoderPro to program a loco with Soundtraxx TSU-2200. On the Basic tab have clicked on Long (two bytes) Address, have set the long address, have gone thru and set sounds, lights, etc. Have Written All to the decoder. Have checked the CV's, CV 17&18 correctly show entries for the long address, all other CVs values look to be OK. However when I put the loco on the ops track (using a DCS 51 for control, nothing fancy), and enter the long address I get no response from the loco. When I enter the short address (03) the motor works fine, but nothing else, i.e. no sound, lights, etc. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?

Raildriver script needs update for JMRI 5.8
6
#raildriver
I recently updated from JMRI 4.26 to 5.8. A script I have for my Raildriver console that was working in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and JMRI 4.26 does not open a throttle window in 5.8. I read in the 5.0 release notes that some commands were removed that had been deprecated (love that term) but I am not a programming wiz and it is not clear to me what exactly has changed. I do not see any error messages in the console but I put some print statements in to see that the script is being executed and gets to the throttle section and appears to hang. I put a copy of the script (RailDriver_AH.py) in the files to be worked on in the 'Allen House' folder. Anyone that could give me help here is appreciated. Regards, Allen

Can't seem to get cars routing the way I want (beginning to setup custom loads)
4
#operationspro
Im getting started with custom loads and I can't seem to get the cars to route loads into staging to be returned as empties. I have two hidden parallel staging tracks-- basically one eastbound and one westbound. My railroad is set in central Pennsylvania, so I want to send trains from the yard as a westbound freight to Chicago (thus into staging). That train will later return as a westbound out of Philadelphia. My first custom loads are Coal, going into the Yard. I want the yard to pick up those Coal loads and take them to Staging, where they will become MT (empties) to return to the yard. I have several other destinations around the layout, some of which will accept Coal loads (occasionally), but I thought I should start small and only build the Coal Train, and the Chicago Freight (which goes to staging). I've tried several things, but I haven't been able to get it to route the Coal loads into staging, What am I not understanding here? I have loaded the build report and a backup of the current OpsPro setting to a new folder in Problems being worked on (https://groups.io/g/jmriusers/files/ProblemsBeingWorkedOn/Scott%20Walton) Scott Walton

Dispatcher Safe Sections questions and possible issue
17
#dispatcher
I've been working on the layout for a while and am finally getting back into Dispatcher AutoTrains. There have been some excellent additions! Thanks Steve_G! and anyone else who helped! I particularly like the "No Signals" feature as that gets me running on my new layout portions much faster! But here's an issue: I'm running with all resistor wheels, no signals, allocate to safe sections, all sections= 1 block, and I have encountered an issue. When I have a safe section which is shorter than the train length, my train is set to speed 1% (not 0%) as soon as it enters that short, safe section, even though the next section is allocated and empty. This happens with 1 train or with 2 trains running (that's as far as I've gotten). It is consistent. Note that a train that is shorter than the safe section drives smoothly through as long as the next section is clear. Workarounds: 1) in the AutoTrains window, Stop and then Restart the train. The train then ramps back up to normal speed and continues the transit. 2) wait for the train to (slowly) reach the next section, (or push it along) and it then returns to normal. Questions: 1) Is it allowed to have a Safe Section shorter than my longest train? 2) Is there a way to set a "minimum" speed for a train? I'd set it to the slowest speed at which the train still moves, i.e. 5% instead of 1%. 3) Why does Dispatcher try to stop (or nearly stop) my train in that section since the next section is allocated and clear? I've studied the trace and debug logs for this situation and have been unable to find where this 1% is being set. Any suggestions appreciated. --SteveT

With a lot of help, I have gotten my system back up and running and was going to update my roster. I have an MTH O scale two rail SD 40–2 that of course cannot be identified by decoder Pro. If I go to manually select, I get three choices MTH HO PS3, HO expanded PS3, HO full PS3 definition. Which one should I choose? Thanks, Bruce in Mount Airy, Maryland.

how are routes triggered
6
#routes
I am trying to determine if the Routes defined in the Profile I inherited are ever invoked, or are they unused (dead) code? If I look at the Edit Route screen, I have nothing listed in any of the 3 optional areas in the bottom part of the screen. ("Sensors that trigger this Route", or the Turnout that triggers or locks this route) I have confirmed this by displaying each route and finding nothing and also going into the HTML and finding nothing for "<routeSensor systemName", "ControlTurnout" and "controlLockTurnout". If I do not have any of these three option items added, is there any way for the route to be invoked other than selecting 'set' on the Routes screen. for the specific route on that row (Set option before Comment, Delete or Edit I would like to delete the routes if there is no way they can be triggered other than the Set option. I have an HTML file with 77000 lines and would like to clean it up where possible to make problem solving easier. I am having issues where some of my turnouts do not initialize properly and want to get rid of the Routes to eliminate them as a possible part of the problem. Thanks for your help and assistance

JMRI can't always make a connection to the USB devices
5
Why is JMRI not able to make a connection with the com ports? I did go into device manager and verify that the computer was happy by plugging and unplugging the USB connection one at a time. When this issue starts usually it is just COM 3. I do a reboot of JMRI and then COM 4 starts acting up. Sometimes I reboot the computer and that fixes it Sometimes I have to reboot the computer numerous times. After a while it starts behaving again and we are fine until the next. Who knowns when that will be. So far it has happened twice in a couple of months. This log is just one startup attempt if you need everything in the log that was done yesterday I have it also. Maximum Speed anomaly?
5
On the prototype here maximum speed is determined by track speed limit and train (type) speed limit. Signals convey occupancy status and where applicable routes. This means when a signal is at proceed the maximum speed is the lesser of the train type or track speed. Therefore, a passenger train with a 160kph limit would not always travel at that speed even if the signals where at proceed. However, with a warrant automated train (AFAIK) when a signal is at proceed, the train maximum speed is applied and track speed limits are ignored. I'm sure there might be a reason but IMO it doesn't make sense for a train to ignore any track speed limits. -- H.O. Split one Route between two Trains
4
#operationspro
Hi - Can a "route" be split between two "trains"? I've created a "route" that includes an I/C yard in the middle of it. The route runs from the "N-S Staging" yard to the "MKT I/C" yard and on to the "HSPG I/C" yard, which is where the route terminates. I want to take unit trains - kernels - of cars from N-S Staging, set the cars out in the MKT I/C yard "overnight", and pick them up later (next session) by a different train and haul them to the HSPG I/C yard. JMRI doesn't seem to like this scenario, and the manual doesn't seem to address this question directly. Is what I propose possible in JMRI, or must I split the entire 'large' route into two smaller routes: #1 - N-S Staging > MKT; and #2 - MKT > HSPG? This group has been very helpful in my JMRI learning process. Thanks! Clarence
