iFTx and QMX not working
Dear all, I got iFTx a while ago and I managed to close a number of QSOs with my iPhone 13. This app is not great, it has some limitations, but it works. Last Saturday I tried to activate a summit in 10m. CW was no go so I connected my QMX to my iPhone (lightning connector to usb video camera, this set up had worked for me in the past). While I was receiving from many places in the world when I tried to transmit, that was done intermittently. The solid line (indicating TX) at the left hand side appeared intermittently (like 0.5 sec off, 0.5 sec on) and no qso was done. This set up had worked for me with previous firmwares, although I am not sure if that is the reason of the malfunctioning (I was using fw 019). Any hint of what might had happened? Tnx, Joan

CAT control and compatibility with Kenwood TS-480
7
I'm on the DXLog development team and struggle with implementing the drivers for the QMX and QCX models. If I had access to them I could do reverse engineering but unfortunately I don't. The CAT part of the QMX/QCX documentation is not very detailed and unfortunately also somewhat inconsistent. Since my help desk ticket remains unanswered I am turning to this reflector. The challenges I face are the following: RD/RU Is the implementation of the RD and RU commands really the same as the TS-480? The documentation suggests otherwise. With the TS-480, RD must be followed by exactly four digits and decreases the RIT with a certain number of hertz. RU works the same but increases the RIT. The QMX/QCX documentation seems to suggest RD instead sets the RIT to an absolute value and that a sign also must be included in the command (like with Kenwood's RF command). How does RD/RU really work with the QMX/QCX and what is the format? FA/FB With the TS-480, the FA and FB commands must be followed by exactly 11 digits. The QMX/QCX seems to accept a varying length. Is this true? IF With the TS-480, the mode field (character number 30) returns the same code as MD. This does not seem to be the case with the QMX/QCX. Is this true? Thank you in advance, Björn SM7IUN

Very fragile shipping packaging
10
Hey everyone! The packaging for shipping QRP-Labs items is very fragile and insufficient to protect the items over long distances, several comments about broken parts have already been posted and no progress has been made to correct the problem. A more resistant box and better packaged items are essential. Feeling frustrated. FT'sss 73!!! Renato PY2RLM

QMX+ with intl. Speaker and PWR supply on Air
Our club FD is planned for the weekend, so I was pushed to finalize my QMX+. Probably this could give inspiration for simple upgrades of your QMX+, total cost were around 30 EUR. Integration of QMX with QLG2 GPS Receiver module kit ??
2
Hi - I am considering buying a QMX (mid-band) and ordering it pre-built with the enclosure. I am curious - if I purchase the QLG2 GPS kit at the same time - with the assembly of the QMX by QRP-Labs, will they integrate The QLG2 into the QMX enclosure with the pre-build, or do I need to do that part myself after I receive it? Not sure how the QLG2 integrates with the QMX, lots of questions. Any inputs would be welcomed! John - W3JED

50 Watt Amplifier Repair Advice Request
9
Recently I enjoyed assembling the 50 watt power amplifier kit. It was working perfectly until I got greedy for more power while adjusting gain with the R5 potentiometer. I did not have an ammeter to measure current draw during adjustment but instead stupidly thought I could watch output on my power meter and back off when it met the specified power on the power output chart. Though I carefully and slowly turned the potentiometer there was a sudden failure as output power reached about 30 watts on the meter. I then noted an acrid smell and a small amount of brownish liquid coming from the edge of one of the 2 output IRF510 final MOSFET transistors. Stupid me. But I learned something and hope others can learn from my mistake. Follow Hans instructions for adjustment. Now here is my question as I seek to remediate the situation and restore the amplifier..... I have replaced both of the IRF510 output transistors with new ones from Digikey Replacement went well, no solder bridges. However on power up there amplifier function is not normal and I am wondering what other components would most likely have been damaged and need replacement? Whereas before the accident keying the amp on or off was nearly instantaneous and generated about 20 watts even with the potentiometer fully counter clockwise, now THE RED TRANSMIT LIGHTS STAYS ILLUMINATED FOR ABOUT A FULL SECOND AFTER A KEY PRESS, and output power is only about 6 watts. Another possible clue is that the 19 volt lap top charger I was using to charge it now shuts itself off quickly when I connect it to the amplifier. (I suspect the lap top charger power supply has some type of protection circuit in it as after I disconnect and reconnect it from wall outlet power it resumes its 19 volt output). Before I start removing and replacing other components such as Q4, Q5, Q6, or some of the switching diodes, etc. I would very much appreciate any guidance about how to best pin point the problem and proceed. What other component(s) is/are most likely the remaining problem? How best to proceed short of buying a new kit and starting over. Thanks.

50 Watt Amplifier Repair Advice Request
First sentence of my longer reply should read "Q5 controls the keying " Q6 is also a possible area issue as I indicated. I'll probably cut and paste the prev out and repost with the edit. The assumption you are making that your PS is still good post the exciting event may be invalid. I indicated how to test it. I am guessing it is a small computer SMPS that you refer to. T

Qdx via iPhone
3
I bought the iftx app to use my qdx with my iphone 11. My dream was a portable station but I couldn't get it to work. Has anyone used an iPhone or iPad with QDX before? It is written that vox should be activated for qmx. Should we do this for qdx as well? If we are going to activate vox, should we use an interface? What kind of connection should we make? I am very confused :) 73. TA3ONK. Onur

QMX + dead
3
just powered up my QMX+. Software loaded nicely and seems to be fine. I can change bands an hear some noise in the earphones. But no receive at all. I tried to send a signal from another rig and did not hear anything at all on the QMX. Is there something I overlooked in the setup or did I make a mistake in the build. I did not look into the tools af chapter 8 as I totally ignore how to use PuTTY ( I did not eben know about it) Martin DK3UW

#qmx #firmware 1_00_020 released: minor stuff and bug fixes
22
#qmx
#firmware
Hi all I released firmware 1_00_020 for QMX and QMX+ which you can download at http://qrp-labs.com/qmx and there is also an updated operating manual for this version. Please note, this is a minor release, and I hope it will not draw too much criticism of what has and what has not been included; I just wanted to get the documentation up to date (1_00_019 was missing an operating manual) and clear up a few things that several people had identified as urgent or were very simple or I had done already in the last few weeks. The new "Test ADC I/Q" tool is also a useful diagnostic aid. As always: if it is not in this list, it has not been done; so no need to point out all the things that are wrong that are NOT in this list, if it has been mentioned on this forum already it means it is most likely already on my ToDo list. And I do know some bugs will be particularly bothering particular people... and aren't solved yet... and that will surely disappoint someone. So I have my asbestos on... But at least, let's tick off a few things and keep the ball rolling. And do please rest assured: SSB is the current main priority - and now Dayton and Friedrichshafen are out of the way, this will be my focus. 1. New Test ADC I/Q tool shows baseband I/Q samples, aiding diagnostics Useful tool that shows a 750Hz sinewave cycle at baseband, and if it is correct, clean and shows correct 90-degree I Q phase, it verifies the receiver front end is working properly. If NOT, then it could give indications of other issues, in conjunction with other evidence; please see the operating manual at page 83 for a full description. 2. Add 20dB of attenuation in earphones when in Digi mode (equalize volume to CW) Stops you being accidentally deafened if you change from CW mode to Digi by mistake. Surely there must be some way to calculate given a bandwidth difference, what the perceived volume difference would be... in the absence of having a sufficiently functional cerebral cortex I just found that 20dB sounds a lot better than nothing at all. 3. Remove the experimental "SuppressThump" setting which is now always on I see no reason to not use SuppressThump, so the setting is now gone and the thing it did, is now always done. 4. Configure AGC defaults on factory reset (or new installation) AGC (CW mode) is now on by default (after factory reset or on a fresh QMX) and the settings of the video https://youtu.be/DwqwID-jGNk set up by default, except for Sample Blocks which is set to 2. 5. Bug fix: Display leftovers on GPS display on LCD 6. Bug fix: RF, AF and Image Sweep tools didn't work unless in VFO Mode A already 7. Bug fix: Selecting a preset did not change the LPF selection, only the VFO Now it selects the appropriate band and filters selection, so this should solve some danger, when using presets... 8. Bug fix: LPF and SWR sweep screens broke if not all bands were enabled Now fixed... 9. Bug fix: CAT bug, remove \0 character in AG; command response 10. Bug fix: CAT bug, in IF command (1 character too long) 11. Bug fix: CAT bug, remove \0 character in TM; command response 12. Bug fix: Change minimum frequency from 3.2 MHz to 1.5 MHz So now 160m receive should work BUT - note that I have not fixed up the correct 90-degree phase on 160m, and this means that there isn't any image rejection on 160m and also sensitivity will be a bit lower than it should be. Note also the description of the CPU Utilisation monitor is now also in the operating manual, at page 102. 73 Hans G0UPL http://qrp-labs.com https://www.buymeacoffee.com/g0upl

Keyboard CW
33
Hi All, I really like CW, and I am good at 13 WPM listening to W1AW. I can copy behind and feel no stress. I would like to use a keyboard, so I can send perfectly spaced CW and rag chew. Not a touch typist, 13 WPM is a good speed for my hunt and peck. I want the receiving station not to have to deal with my straight key or paddle spacing etc. Currently the USB cable on my QMX+ doesn't incorporate this feature. Maybe someday it will. For now, I am looking for suggestions for the best way to do this without a computer. I had a Heathkit Keyboard, but it gave up on me mechanically after years. I haven't seen anything similar; but i'm pretty certain that someone on this forum knows! Thank you, George K3GK

QMX+ Prebuilt waiting list
7
I am planning to order a prebuilt QMX+ with GPS and case. I see that there are currently about 750 entries in the waiting list. So I asked another ham who ordered a prebuilt QMX in April, when he expects his to be delivered, and he told me that he did not move up in the queue since then and got no Updates. How is that possible? I guess I won't be ready to pay the full price in advance without getting any delivery date or at least any update on it for months. Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks. 73, Robert OE7OER

TenTec Rebel Keyer
2
I want to say that the source for the keyer in the rebel alliance was open QRP and I'm wondering if anyone ever worked with the code to make a bug option available? Caught the Bug and now I'd like to keep using the motion even when I'm in the field with my QRP rig and can't bring along the slab-o-iron and it's wonderful wiggly bits. I love my TenTec506 and I've used it as my primary radio for the last 10 years, it's even been to some fire towers in the Adirondacks! But I don't think the Vibroplex is up for the challenge, nor would I want to risk it. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Best 73, N2QFD//Mal

QMX transmits fine, but no receive
13
Hi folks, my QMX mostly works (user interface, transmission), but there is no receive. I already read other messages about it and digged a little bit into it, according to Jeff Moore's way of probing towards the PCM1804. I applied a -38 dBm sine wave to the BNC and checked with my Rigol. I can see the signal at the L401 end of C401-404, but on the IC402 end I have the signal on C403 (pin 10), C404 (pin 12) and C402 (pin 13). On pin 11, after C404 I read flat 2,3V. This seems odd to me. Is the IC402 dead, or is this normal? The image rejection check and the RF check via the USB interface result in messy, garbage results, too. KR Dirk

Yihua 959D question
15
Hello all, I just purchased my first hot air rework station. It is a Yihua 959D, Amazon Prime Day deal. It appears to be well made and well thought out. It came with a few different size nozzles and a small black plastic handle like thing with a screw and a formed wire thingy. I have no clue what this for. If anybody can educate me as to what this is and for, I would appreciate it. Thank you, Eric

Help from Jeffrey Moore W1NC
5
I want to thank Jeffrey for sorting out my QMX+. In a previous topic I asked for help regarding some holes filled with solder. I had stupidly installed the wrong capacitors and in the process of removing and replacing, could not get the proper ones reinstalled. I used a very fine drill to drill out the solder and then hoped for the best. I did get a lot of advice from this group. When the kit was finished it did not work at all, and aside from re soldering and checking for bridges I was at a loss where to go. I am not a good tech. Jeffrey offered to have a look and that look took him 6 hours to sort out my blunders. He only asks for the cost of the parts and shipping, but will accept donations to help others. I have come across other Hams who have helped me, Ron Taylor of course resurrected a qcx that had a bad IC. Our amateur radio community is certainly something to be proud of. I will try to pass it on, but it takes someone like Jeffrey and Ron to make such a difference because of their technical abilities and willingness to help. To make a little joke. I was an Oral Surgeon for almost 50 years. And my usual way to practice was to give the local anesthetic, wait and then repeat it a second time. Patients and Doctors would ask me why I did that when others do not? My flip answer was that when I die and meet St. Peter at the gates to heaven, he is going to ask me what I ever did to deserve to come to heaven. I had a ready answer, "I froze everyone twice." And his reply will be "Come right in!" Enough said. 73/72 to the group and Jeffrey Moore W1NC

Progrock2 for Atlas210x
9
Hello All, This is the first time joining a "group" so I am likely going to have difficulties navigating this place for while. I had xtal go bad on my Atlas 210x and its proving to be a challenge to find a replacement. I am wondering if anyone has been successful using a Progrock2 for this? The product is intriguing, but I am also certain I do not have the knowledge to figure it out on my own. Anyone done this before with an Atlas 210x?

QDX RF filter sweep fine for all bands but 20m...
2
#10m
#20m
#qdx
Hi, I recently built the QDX (for 10m - 20m) and it went really well. So far, I haven't been able to test with an antenna because of the weather, but I have used the internal test tools. Doing an RF sweep, I noticed that most bands are good (or acceptable for some), but the 20m doesn't seem right. Here are measurements for 10m and 20m: RF Filter Sweep at 10m RF Filter sweep at 20m As you can see, sweep doesn't look great for 20m. My first question is, am I measuring this correctly? I didn't want there to be any spurious transmission signal, so I hooked up a 50Ω dummy load. Is that necessary or shouldn't I do that? (If this is mentioned in the manual, I must have overlooked it.) Secondly, given the response in the second image, what could be wrong? Perhaps something wrong with the toroid (number of windings), capacitors? I'm just trying to determine how I can get to the root cause quickest. I have some measurement equipment, like DVM and oscilloscope. Any input would be greatly appreciated! 73 Sander [VK6PI]

QMX: Build Rev 1?
2
I have a QMX Rev 1 kit, that has been on the shelf for a while. As it is a few versions back, can I build it and have it work reliably by just following directions.....or are there some issues I will discover that have been fixed by later versions? Would like to know before warming up the iron!!! 73! Dave

Protection for QMX/QCX display
3
#solution
#qcx
#qmx
Hello friends, Let me share my way of protection QMX/QCX mini or plus display. To be honest, this is not about protection in general but adding a little bit aesthetics to these nice rigs. Well known, that more expensive RIGs such as Elecraft KH1, MTRv3/4,5b, etc do not cover their displays at all. My sense of perfection wanted to have a piece of glass to seal this rectangular hole in these cases. Helped me with that - plexiglass. I found 2mm thin piece of Plexiglas with size about 300x400 millimeters in local garden store (as part for building aquariums). My item labeled with site https://www.plexiglas.de/en/home What you need for this: Measure wide part of rectangular hole and add a few millimeters. It is common, that after you break off part, there will be some scratches or potholes. You can fix this with sandpaper 200-300 grid in case of added extra millimeters. Make a deep scratch using measured wide of hole with 2-3 extra millimeters added. I used manual sharp flat screwdriver, but I know there is special tools for this. I have this tool, but it was more comfortable to use screwdriver =) personally for me. Break off this part using sharp corner of table. It will be quite long piece of plexiglas. But you will have at least ten attempts in case of mistakes. Measure height of rectangular hole and make a deep scratch with adding about 2-3 extra millimeters. Break of this small part of plexiglas using some sharp corner of table. Now using sandpaper fit this piece of plexiglas to the hole by removing extra millimeters. But don't harry up and after five or ten runs on sandpaper try to fit it again and again. If you trim to much you have to start from #2 step. Set your small plexiglas to rectangular hole. In my case it fits very tight and it is hard to remove it from hole. I also used a few drops of superglue inside of case on glass edges. But be aware to not tarnish glass with glue. It will be hard to remove these drops of superglue. In case of 2mm thin glass it will be about 0.5 mm above case inside if you want that front to be flat. It will be a little harder to install PCB, but if you find plexiglas 1.5mm it will fit perfectly. That is all, from my side. Here is youtube short with main steps described above: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/IUwE1PXGBQ8
