Adding a TUNE button to a V2 software build
14
OK, perhaps someone has already done this, but I wanted to have a TUNE button on the screen of my V2 and Developers' Editions for multiple reasons: a) I sometimes have automatic antenna tuners in line, and I need to send them about 5 watts for the protection of both the sBitx and the automatic tuner, to allow it to adjust impedance matching. b) I sometimes need to tune an ancient vacuum tube (yes, I know, horrors! but it WORKS) linear amplifier that needs its pi network tuned for maximum output with a steady signal. SO I finally got around to adding code to make a TUNE button. I'm not bright enough to put something on github so if this is useful, perhaps someone else can get that done? There are three parts to it, and all can be found by searching for the key phase GLG TUNE in the accompanying sbitx_gtk.c file: 1) The parameters of the screen display of a toggle button have to be entered into the struct that keeps track of all of those 2) When the button is pressed, that has to be detected, the existing MODE and DRIVE have to be captured and saved, then the MODE is switched to 2TONE and the drive set to about 40% (which, being a voltage multiplier, means about 16% of maximum power, whatever you have 100 set to on that band); and then the radio pushed into transmit mode. 3) When the button is again depressed to go back into normal mode, the transmitter must be turned back off, and the MODE and DRIVE returned to their previous values. You can read the c code below by searing for GLG TUNE to see how I did these items. There may be a better way, this one just seems to work so far! This happens to be part of my larger effort to flatten the receiver and transmitter response and allow for response changes for my high school students, but these should not become active unless you really want them, and can be safely ignored. You could just copy the relevant sections into YOUR sbitx_gtk.c and it should compile. 73 Gordon KX4Z

RX sensitivity
17
#v6
Hello ! This is a very dummy question, but I can't really find the information... I would like to know what is the RX sensitivity of the ubitx ? I'm planning to use it (among other things) in my sailboat to receive weather forecast, but how good is the reception compared to a SDR (RTL-SDR, or even the more HF-oriented SDRPlay RSPDx), or to a HF transceiver from big brands ? Many thanks ! 73's from French Guyana ;) Thomas

sBITX active cooling
28
#3d_printing
#sBitx
I designed and 3D printed a plate that holds a fan and a cover with a larger opening. The plate holds a quiet 40 mm x 10 mm fan to cool the PI in the sBITx. This plate has sides that are meant to direct air from right side case vent through fan and out the top and the left side vent. The air flow may also help cool the RF section too. I used a quiet Noctra fan. https://www.printables.com/model/921214-sbitx-active-cooling-fan As a companion I designed and printed a top plate with larger opening for better air flow and HDMI access. https://www.printables.com/model/921224-sbitx-top-cover-plate These appear to lower my Pi 4 temperature by 10 to 15 degrees C when in heavy use like FT8. I think that the airflow over the RF board helps cool it too. -- 73 Bob KD8CGH

Homebrew SBITX - RTC and SWR Meter board
22
#homebrew
#sBitx
Hi all - I've built a board for the RTC module and SWR sensor. These are the final two modules for the bult. The RTC module is working great. The SWR sensor not so much. I posted on an old thread about the issues I'm having with the AtTiny85. I finallly managed to download the board manager and build and load the firmware onto the Tiny. It comes up on the bit-bang I2C bus OK and apparently responds to the request for data but the Pi always receives -1 for both Fwd and Ref power. The RTC and AtTiny are on the same board and I'm confident its wired up correctly. I've separately built a number of other projects using the AtTiny - including my own stand-alone SWR meter with an OLED display so I'm confident there is no problem with the wiring. I know the directional coupler is working ok because I tested it with my stand-alone meter - and I read about 1.5V FWD on 20 watt CW key down on 40 meters.. To eliminate the A2D entirely I made a test version of the sketch for the Tiny that sends back fixed hard-coded FWD and REF power. And the only value the Pi ever reads is -1. I'm puzzled and at a bit of a loss for what else to look for. Looking for any suggestions. 73, Dean KK4DAS I even built a simple board with only the AtTiny that plugs directly into the I2C BB header on the Pi Hat. it exhibits the same behavior.

#sBitx
Hello. I created a pre-compiled version of sBitx on 64 Bit for the Raspberry Pi4 for those who are interested. https://github.com/drexjj/sbitx/releases/tag/sBitx-v3.02-64-Bit Please go ahead and test it, sharing your thoughts afterward. Consider this a beta version, pending improvements based on the feedback I receive.. I've included sBITX Toolbox as well as other ham radio apps. It has been tested on both a 2GB Pi and 4GB Pi without issues. The download is designed to fit a 32GB SD Card or USB storage device. -JJ

Error in Sound Input
24
#sBITX_v3
Error in Sound Input I got the above error message while using sbitx with an external hdmi monitor and the jtdx program. The built-in RPi4 has 4GB of memory. I've been using the device in this configuration for a few days and occasionally I get this message, which I can eliminate by restarting. My audio settings are: input: plughw:CARD=Loopback, DEV=1 mono output: plughw:CARD=Loopback_1,DEV=0 mono Maybe my audio input setting is wrong? I am sure that I have output when I have the above output settings. When the error message appears, it still works, the sound does not drop. -- Gyula HA3HZ

N8ME Firmware Day/Night Colors Switch Mod
3
On N8ME's v0.2, I am able to switch between two color "themes" for day and night (Red) by adding a hardware switch to the Arduino's analog pin A7 and an "If..Else" statement in display.cpp to select between two groups of colors. (I also made those variables not constants.) All colors change depending on the switch position correctly EXCEPT the VFO colors*. Since the VFO display goes through some code to determine which VFO is active, changing the colors is more complicated. *If the VFO related color variables are defined outside of my If..Else function, you get those defined VFO colors. However, if those same variables are defined inside the function, they do not work and the VFO colors are black. Maybe its a scope or extern problem. I don't know. :) The hardware switch wiring is just adding a 20k pull-up resistor between A7 and +5v on the CONTROLS header and the switch goes between A7 and GND. (I will include pics). Apparently A6 and A7 do not have internal pull-ups if I understand right. If N8ME is OK with it, should I post my version and see if anyone wants to take a crack at getting the VFO colors to change with the switch?

S/N 0994 receiver internal noise
22
Purchased a V3 from a ham on QTH. Told it was 2 weeks old and it’s of course built and tweaked at the factory. S/N 0994 so someone could ascertain it’s true build date. It has several issues but the most glaring one is internal receiver noise. Read all the forums, blogs, etc. 5v Buck boost module has a systemic problem. As some users units exhibit the exact issue I’m observing. I’m guessing some V3’s work or there would be more of a footprint here on this issue. Tried adding of the suggested caps on the enable line also on the input and outputs of the 5v bb module. Slight if any improvements. Still unusable on 40 meters. Its absolutely worst there. Purchased the suggested Drok module. Still problematic. Used RC low pass on the output. Some improvement but come on. Im spending too much time on the hardware as I purchased this to help my Linux bone. No issues updating the V3 or Pi configuration. Some struggle with the time zones correctly being displayed. No problem as having Linux experience helped. Is there anyone who has a handle on this internal noise problem?? Dont need “what worked for me” comments. Whats the solution? Should be relatively easy for the folks who designed this to weigh in and implement a hard fix. Not complaining just need pertinent help. Many other issues with this radio that more than likely can be fixed via the code. AGC after unkey hangs to long except when AGC is off. Easy fix. No S meter. Should be able to implement that via code. Of course the screen resizing for WJST etc. Just to mention the obvious. Anyway if your going to buy one of these and aren’t ready to deal with these problems stay away until it’s more mature. Both hardware and software. Im just trying to get it function hardware wise before starting any major code experiments.

Nextion Display USB Adapter wiring
49
#nextion
#ubitx
#ubitxv6
Hello everyone, I'm looking at the Nextion installation instructions from the ubitx.net site. It instructs to hook a USB Adapter cable to the Nextion to test that it works. It is specific on hooking the +5v and ground connections. My Nextion did not come with a USB adapter so I ordered one. My problem is that the Nextion has the following color coded wires: Red - +5V Blue - TX Yellow - RX Black - GND I got these colors from the UBitX V6 Nextion instructions. The USB Adapter has the following wire colors: Red Black Green White The UBITX.Net instructions call to hook up the +5V and the ground to the Nextion screen. On the USB Adapter would the Red wire be +5V and the black wire is Ground? -- '72 Aaron Scott The K5ATG Blog ( https://k5atg.blogspot.com/ ) Mid-Del Amateur Radio Club ( http://www.w5mwc.org/ ) QRPARCI# 16443 GQRP# 16389 4SQRP # 1080

sBITX-V3 : USB-Headset not working
28
Hello ... after lots of trouble I had really decided to funeral the sBITX and won't spent more time and waste no more time with my sBITX-V3. But I have bring it up again on the homebrew table since two weeks ... and repaired... studied ...repaired and repaired measured , adjusted and modified. Now - which an miracle - it works stabel with ~25 watts in all modes and also with good SSB audio tx quality with most microphones if using the UR5QW 12-band Audio-Equalizer V8 . But one problem always is present and unsolved: I get really not to work an USB-Headset . I bought different compatible headsets ( like listed in the sBITX-Tooöbos manual) ... but the audio (headphone and mic) will absolutly not routed from and to the sBITX !!! I use the latest 32 bit sBITX-Toolbox , studied all in the toolbox-manual about troubleshoting ... I really don't know how the audio setup must be configurated and also I don't know where the audio setup's can configure and how in LINUX ... settings for USB-headset with sBITX ??? With Windows ... no problem , but with the Linux system ... I have no idea . All headset will found from Linux in "alsamixer" and they are to see ... and the sliders can adjusted ... but I get nothing from and to the sBITX ...!!! Only the PTT from the Toolbox is working... Any help please ??? 73 , Jens / HB9JOI

Ubitx V6 S meter connections
5
Morning/Afternoon All, I have a very basic question about KD8CEC's S-meter circuit. On the diagram of the 'simplest model' pin 6 of the LM386 is identified going to 5VoltRaduino 3 (green line). What does this mean? Pin 3 of the Arduino Nano is marked 'ref'. It is pin 12, next to the pin marked A7, that is identified at 5v..? Apologies if this is very obvious... Thanks, N

New ubitx builder. Looking for variable resistor settings, RV3 and RV4-5
4
Hi I'm building a ubitx v5, new kit from India. I tried looking in past messages for word as calibration, first setup and so on, but no exact match, to date, for ubitx v5. Can someone please point me to a description of the correct setup procedure? I imagine the two 10K Ohm variable resistors (RV4-RV5) are for the bias of IRF510. Correct? How to set them? Found a post from -----------------------------------------------------" Evan Hand 03/10/21 #86791 There is not a way to measure the separate current without cutting a trace on the mainboard. The way that I do it is to get an average of the received current, and then subtract from the total current when transmitting. It will be off by a few milliamps, as there are parts of the rig that are turned off for transmit. If your question is how to adjust RV2 & RV3, then start with both all the way clockwise, key the mic, and then note the current. Adjust first one, then the other, with each adjustment increasing the total current to the rig my 100ma. ----------------------------------------------------" If I recall correctly, setting the same bias in a push pull stage improves the simmetry of the amplified signal. How much close must I set the two VR? RV3, 100 Ohm, works in the TX signal path? How to set it? Any help will be welcome 73 Giuseppe Stancanelli IU0OYC

Homebrew SBITX with Hat

On his recent stop in Northern Virginia Farhan was gracious enough to give me one of the sbitx hats to use in my homebrew rig. I replaced the homebuilt digital board that I have been using with the hat and it is working great. Here is link to a short demo. If you are thinking of home brewing an sBitx like SDR the Hat is the perfect starting place. 73, Dean KK4DAS
