Does anyone used e wood paulownia or japanese kiri in the construction of a boat?

Hi Everyone I just uploaded a few new pictures to the D.R. Voyager album here. We are done fiberglassing as far as I know. I still have to sand and fair a lot, clear coat, then sand again and then we will paint. We have also done some interior work. Cheers Patrick

Bernd, I saw where you mentioned plans including a wooden mast for the early Duo800. Carbon is still a little pricey and I like the ability to make a wooden mast. I have Duo800 plans with the carbon layup. Is it possible to get the wooden plans? North Carolina sharpies routinely sailed with unstayed wooden mast, in the winter gales in the sounds of Carolina. Hi all. This week i did start to build an eco6. I have not the ideal conditions, but that's what I get.

Hi guys, I just bought the plans for the eco 6 and I plan to start building it soon. I live in Porto Alegre, Brazil. If there is someone near me I would like to communicate.

I have been building my first boat just small 3,5m sailboat as first practice build before taking on most likely eco 6. What is your best way of working with epoxy and fiberglass to get as close to as possible to shop finish? I personally have not tried peelply is it worth it? Also is there some other alternatives? My current optimal workflow lookslike 1. Basecoat dry rolling epoxy with foamroller 2. super quick rough sanding 3. applying glass fabric and covering with foamroller 4. Quick sand 240 grit applying additional coats up to 3 to get good sanding finish 5. Painting over with marine grade paint 2-3 coats Few questions: Would peel ply make process faster/allow adding more epoxy on single go so no need for multiple layers? How ready is peelply finish still needs sanding ? Any alternative ways of doing close to factory finish that i could skip some steps or make some process in otherways? Lessons so far: On next build looking to base coat all ply pre cutting, did not do it with this build but would greatly speed up the process.

Is the Duo 1000 rig freestanding?

I cut out 2 bulkheads today so I guess I’ve officially started my build. I bought the plans a couple weeks ago and I have been gathering materials. I have a couple questions about the plans. Am I correct in assuming bulkheads 1, 2, and 3 show the upper and lower part on the drawings together, but I build them in 2 pieces? Also, in Brian’s build blog he mentions there is an option in the drawings to make a curved front for the cabin, but I don’t see it in my drawings. Thanks, Mark

Iused to own a Wharram Tiki 30 with a pod and I am looking for a design with more comfort which can be trailerable to launch site approx 1000kh away. There will be be a crew of 2 or 3 experienced people building and I would like to finish in 1 year. Can you recommend a design . Thank you Pst

Hi Bill, A year ago I discussed with Bernd about the choice of ply. One of the key consideration is weight. He said that impregnated marine ply are usually very heavy and not suitable. From what I leant, a regular sheet of oukoume ply after being covered by 2 layers of epoxy is water resistant. The only thing to take of are any hole you make into the ply. They have to be oversized than properly saturated with epoxy than drilled again at the correct diameter. This is to prevent any water from being in contact with the wood inside. The other consideration was strength and flexibility. This is were the oukoume ply structure has another advantage over other types of plywood. One of the major pain in the building process will be to coat and polish every single piece of ply before even starting assembly. I will be trying to get local manpower in Thailand to assist. Will they do it properly? Would I do it better? How to control the quality of the job is my biggest question.
