Hello everyone. I have joined this list after this morning upgraded my Kurzweil 1000. It has been several years since I used this application. Between my last use of K1000 and now, I have installed an Index Everest embosser. In setting up the properties for K1000 to properly print to this, I notice three choices for correctly forcing new pages. Form feed, vertical tab and skip lines. K1000's default are 40 characters per line, 25 lines per page. These can be adjusted. There are no settings for binding space and number of blank lines at the top of each page and page number position so I presume the embosser just looks after those. The setup is Windows 11, and I use the supplied Index driver which is networked. Experimenting of course, but if others have found the configuration which works - I'd be pleased to learn about it. Hello folks, I received this email recently from the Groups.io tech folks, and wanted to make sure I put an announcement out for folks! I'll just paste it below, but basically Groups.io is having to re-verify some users' email addresses due to one of the email servers being blacklisted as a "spam" server by a security provider earlier in the month. In order to fix that, they're requiring some (but not everyone, it seems) to re-verify their email addresses. I looked through the members list here and we have several folks who need to complete this process ASAP, so I wanted to get a message out to you all. This caused any email service that uses Spamhaus to stop accepting email from our server. Because of this, we began a reverification process and sent out reverification emails to a subset of our users on Sunday January 14th. Spamhaus lifted their block on Monday, January 15th, 2024, but we need to continue the reverification process. You can see which, if any, of your users are affected. Go to the Admin section of your group and look at the Members page. Next to each user's email, there may be a badge with the letters RI or RS. RI means the confirmation/reverification is in progress, but has not been completed. RS means the confirmation/reverification has been successfully completed. Here are the next steps in the reverification process: On Sunday, January 28th, group emails to people in the RI state will be disabled. Messages from moderators and login link emails will still work. Until February 11th, people will still be able to reverify themselves and the RI and RS badges will still show up in the Members page. After that, members still in the RI state will be removed from groups. The activity log entry will be Membership - Member Removed, with the added reason of reverification failed. For domains where no reverifications happened, no invites or direct adds will be permitted going forward. I'm hoping someone on here might be able to give me some guidance. I acquired this keyboard in non-working condition. It only shows blocks on the display. The first thing I had to do was replace the eproms because it only had one out of two eproms populated. I burnt the Pro76 eproms and added the three sound roms it was missing. I went through all the checks on k1000.net a few times. The power supply is giving proper voltages with no ripple. I started probing everything. I see tons of activity around the 68000 and anything associated with it. Lots of pulsing for the address and data busses, etc I see virtually no activity around the arnold chips and everything that comes after the arnold. I'm not the greatest with digital stuff so I'm at a bit of a loss. Is it likely that both my arnold chips are dead or that some input is wrong and that is preventing them from operating? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi folks, Glad to have joined the group here. We got a used K1000 keyboard almost five years ago; when we bought it, the previous owner said that it had been fully upgraded (paraphrasing), but of course at the time we didn't understand the specifics. The list of sounds matches the "Pro 1" sound list here: https://www.k1000.net/sounds-pro1.htm; the "Show Version" menu option says "Engine: v5.32" and "Setups: v5.10". So far we have just been naive preset users, not really even knowing how to move around properly in the menus. The unit was in storage for maybe a year or so but a couple of weeks ago I got it back out for my daughter to use. I recently printed the manuals and started to read them a bit, having been interested to get to know it better when I find some time. Then suddenly this week... All was fine until a couple of days ago; my daughter complained about it playing two notes at the same time and that appears to be the case. I did some testing against another keyboard and to me it sounds like the Kurzweil is playing what I'd call "imperfect fifths" when you hold down a single note. I looked at the "Transpose" parameter for each layer from a few different randomly-selected sounds but didn't find anything other than zeros, save for one patch that was transposed an octave (it was set to "12"). I'm wondering if it's malfunctioning, such that the "hard reset" is the only option here, but I'm loathe to do it because I am not sure if there are any custom programs from the previous owner in there somewhere - I went through the full range of sounds (000-493; with 401-493 saying "(not found)") and the lists (000-099, 101-163, 201-299 and 301-363) matching the "Pro 1 sounds" lists). I'm confused by the FAQ (https://www.k1000.net/faq.htm#faqpvsid) saying that in the Rev 5 products, the RAM programs were in "location 255 down" - I don't know if this means 000-255 or 201-255 in the "Pro 1 Sounds" list - I was under the impression that these lists were all ROM sounds from the myriad ROM chips that get installed. Hopefully I did my homework well and the description above is helpful - thanks in advance for any recommendations! Chuck

I have taken some time and am still trying to get to know this beautiful machine better with the help of the precious collection of infos on the k1000.net site. Before unmounting the main board though, I would need some little advice concerning the flaws explained a little further down. Hope somebody can help :-) So, here is what I have so far: roms installed: u50 u51 u54 u55 u58 u59 the unit seems to be in original state without any modifications the relay on the mainboard is a Matsushita with clear top (have already ordered a Panasonic one just in case) I am only testing through the headphones for now (!) and it sounds good, all keys play, ram works, I can save sounds in user memory Have slightly dusted off the interior and the mainboard, then did a hard reset and went into diagnostic mode, runned all self tests with one UART fail • LCD VISUAL TEST ok • BUTTON TEST ok • PROGRAM ROM TST ok • SETUP ROM TEST ok • RAM TEST ok • BATTERY BAK TST ok • TIMER TEST ok • UART TEST ER19>KEYBD UART DATA ERROR U102 ER19 ADDR>780001 EX>0000 OB>FF00 15-(ER19 BITS)-0 BBBBBBBB******** • ARNOLD 1 TEST ok • ARNOLD 0 TEST ok • SOUND ROM TEST ok • ONE SAMPLE TEST ok • MIDI LOOP TEST ok • SINE WAVE TEST ok • SEVEN SAMP TEST ok Now my problems: *1)* the last program is 179 (tuning note), not 184 !? after comparing with the program list from the manual I realise 5 programs are missing: 160 (mono pressure vibrato clarinet) 158 (poly pressure vibrato clarinet) 148 (pressure tremolo vibes) 138 (mono pressure strings) 132 (piano & vibes) It is as if they were just not on the ROM ??!? Can somebody explain that? *2)* Programs 03 through 08 are not playable over the whole keyboard (see list below), which means some keys to the left and some keys to the right just make no sound. This occurs of course with all associated programs that use the same sample soundfiles. Changing the low note and the high note of the layer in the edit menu doesn't change anything: program 03 (choir) G#1 to G#6 only program 04 (vibes) F#2 to D7 only program 05 (acoustic bass) A0 to E4 only program 06 (trumpet) C3 to F#6 only program 07 (baritone horn) D#2 to A5 only program 08 (clarinet) F2 to G#6 Funny enough, the range is different with each of these programs, ROM tests show no errors. Other programs like 01 (grand piano) play fine through the whole keyboard. Still, I pushed down all roms slightly, dusted them off and at first sight the eprom legs don't seem to be corroded (?). Until I am not sure that the problem doesn't lie elsewhere, I'd rather not take them out, because they seem to sit in there quite tightly. Hi everyone! I just joined this group, but I was a member of the old K1000,net group. This Xmas, I pulled out my 4 1000 modules, and completely refurbished them I now have upgraded the displays to LED, and have upgraded three to Pro 1, Pro 2, and Pro 3. Very easy upgrade, In fact, 2 of my 1000HX units were fully socketed, so I pulled the 23 button face from my 1000AX+, and upgraded the HX to a Pro 3. Now for the difficult part. I've successfully upgraded the 1000AX+ to a Pro 2 unit, and transplanted an 8 button faceplate onto it. But, I am urgently looking for the following parts, which were damaged on the original AX+ unit. --Power button (switch replacement was easy to find, but the nice matching button is gone....) --2 black push buttons for the front panel. These have the escutcheon surrounding the center square. I'll take a full button panel, if someone has one. Otherwise, I'll need to go through the painful process of splicing in some square cap tact switches, and maybe use Legos for the button caps. (They almost fit...) --Volume knob. Is it my imagination, or do these things fall off pretty easily? --Rack ears. I know, everyone is looking for these. If someone has a dead unit, I will gladly make an offer. Also, can anyone confirm this: The OS chips are paired into Hi and Lo bytes, so U21 and U32 form what is labelled the PRO PGM (or the PX+ PROG PRO), and U22 and U33 are paired into the SETUP for each unit, which I suspect contain the name list of the patches, and the patch ROM addresses. Anyone know anything about this? Also, this: PRO 3 8 button upgrade Instructions on K1000.net reference some difficult hardware modifications to get the 8 button Pro 3 to work. But, the description or file describing the process does not seem to exist. Anyone successfully upgrade an 8 button unit to Pro3, and what are those hardware modifications to get it to work? Thanks. Hi All, Since repairing my K1000SE, I bought another K1000, replaced both LCD's with OLED screens and upgraded all the ROM's to Pro-76 (or K1200 Pro 1 Expander) equivalent. I love them but I have a question w.r.t. MIDI latency. Sometimes I drive the K1000's over MIDI from a Korg D1 piano. It often seems like I'm hearing chords spread out, and even the start of the chords is slightly delayed, although the latter is not on every patch..... I hear it mostly on piano patches. Has anyone experienced this? I'm wondering if the sample-based patches - like piano - may be slightly late just due to the way the piano hits have been sampled and cropped (unlike synth patches where the waveform generation starts immediately). When I listen to the Korg D1, it's sounds are more immediate. But maybe it's just me. It's hard to do a double blind test. :-) BTW I still haven't been able to get the K1000SE aftertouch working yet. New member here - I've one simple question to ask: I have a Kurzweil 1000 GX which unfortunately won’t turn on any more, so I’d like to try replacing the fuse. I’ve been able to pull out the entire AC socket compartment (which has an image of a fuse on it) as instructed in the manual, but once the whole thing is out, there seems no way to get inside it to access the actual fuse. I can’t pull it out any further and am assuming the fuse is inside the part I’ve pulled out, even though it looks like a solid block. I’ve been searching everywhere for advice but have found nothing. Thanks for any tips!!

I've scoured all the schematics (from k1000.net) and I don't see anything related to aftertouch. (Maybe I missed something.) Can anyone help? If there's an upgraded schematic anywhere, I'd love to see it. (Regarding the boot problem.... An electrolytic capacitor close to the SRAM chips had leaked and corroded a very faint track from the OR chip feeding the write-enable SRAM input pins. I wired around this and everything is back to normal. (In the process of troubleshooting I also replaced all electrolytics across all boards, resoldered the P1 connector and installed a new SRAM chip.) Best regards, Michael

Hi everyone, I just bought a K1000SE that won't boot. (It also has a sticker that says "Extended ROM"). I've opened it up and I have the multi-meter and soldering iron ready. :-) The program and setup ROM tests come up 'ok.' The RAM test gives error 07, plus some other stuff. The Battery test gives error 11. (I Presume it needs a new backup battery.) Just after some guidance that might accelerate my troubleshooting? I'm about to re-seat all the IC's and connectors, check for bad solder joints and test power supply voltages. Thanks, Michael

Hello group, It has been almost 30 years since I started the K1000.net website. I am no longer able to keep it updated and/or active so it is time for someone else to take over. A couple of options. 1. The website is hosted at blue host. And the domain name and hosting is paid for a couple more years. I would suppose it would be possible to transfer the domain and account ownership to a new person, but I have not verified that process. 2. The entire code and file system can be sent to someone and they can upload to the ISP of their choice. The site is almost entirely simple HTML and will run on almost any ISP at a low cost. Hey folks, I'm talking with someone who is working on making a display reader for Kurzweil instruments accessible on several platforms. To this end he needs to know if pressing the buttons on the module or keyboard sends data out through the MIDI Out. What he needs is for someone to use MIDI-OX, press the buttons on the device, (probably best if this is one with the full numeric button array for completeness) and save the MIDI-OX log file, assuming any MIDI data is sent.
