How long did you guys have to wait before you received your AMP?
3
Hello, I am new to the group. I ordered my La1k about two months ago. It was supposed to ship about two weeks ago but I have not heard from PALSTAR. I have tried to send emails, both to support and info but my emails come back to me. When I call I get a busy signal. Anyone know what's going on? Am I just being too impatient? I'm very willing to wait but it would be easier if I could contact someone. I don't usually have an extra 3,800.00 dollars just sitting in my bank account. To be honest I am afraid I might have some other unexpected expense pop up that I will have to spend the money on! Ughhhh.. Pete Marsh AL7PI Wasilla Alaska

No power out
5
All of a sudden I no longer have any power out in OPR Mode. Example: SWR is near flat; using 20 watts out from my Yaesu FTdx101MP the LA1K, in STBY mode, shows 20 watts out and so does the HF-Auto; all as it should. Now switch the LA1K to OPR mode and it switches to Tx as usual, but now it shows no power out at all, and the HF-Autos power out drops to 9 watts. Weird! All bands and modes behave the same way. Any ideas? Thanks, Steven, N7NF

LA-1K can deliver to Dayton
Greetings. My LA-1K is for sale, see attached photos. I am asking $2500 USD for the amplifier. Clean no smoking environment. In discussion with the Palstar Tech, the 10 dB input attenuator was changed to a 6dB attenuator allowing full output when driven by a SunSDR2 Pro, 15 to 20 watt output SDR transceiver. The photo shows approx 1 KW output on 20m at about 24 watts drive from my Elecraft K3s. Appox 38 amps as recommended limit. I will be in Dayton for the Hamvention, no shipping! Thanks for your consideration. 73, Roger VA1RST VE1-VE0 QSL Bureau Manager

Now: Enhancement request to enforce 30m/60m power limits Was Re: NOT MANY POSTS
6
Don't take this the wrong way Ray, but given the response is you shouldn't be using the LA-1K at all on those bands due to legal limits - 100W on 60m and 200W on 30m - I don't see any value of your request asking them to resolve it. OTOH, I think it makes sense that Palstar blocked 11m amplification - this is the responsible thing to do - and eliminates an entire market/sale to a "target audience of abuse" by hams and CBers alike who push illegal power on that band. Following the same logic, vehicle manufacturers should set hard speed limits on cars so that you can't travel above the speed limit ever, as well. Just like I don't think vehicle makers should own responsible driving, I don't think Palstar should own enforcing hams knowing the rules and obeying them. As a group of device owners, let's try to keep our requests to the manufacturer to things that matter and resolve usability issues. So thanks for raising awareness, but no thanks on your suggested amp behavior enhancement. -------------- David AF6HO On Sun, Apr 21, 2024 at 02:37 AM, tuneupmagic (null) wrote: Rick, VE3PP, pleased be advised in my 7-Jun-2023 post https://groups.io/g/la1k/message/1316 I shared with this group I'd brought to Mark Ward's attention (Palstar's technician) that the LA-1K would put a licensed amateur radio operator solely at risks of violating FCC rules and regulations when making 60M/30M over-the-air transmissions (regardless of permissible power output levels) with the LA-1K in its present configuration. In his reply to my said email notification, Mr. Ward advised me on 1 June 2023, stating "I will forward your comments to Paul on the separate band annunciators for 30M/60M. This would be a display change, with antenna switching capability." As of this writing (nearly a year later!!) Palstar still hasn't released the expected firmware update to address the issues. As the saying goes.. hurry up and wait, my friend. 73 Ray KJ5MI

LA-1K AUTOBAND change issue.
6
I have used the LA-1K for some time now, basically on MARS frequencies outside of the HAM Bands, including the 60-meter band. Lately I have had issues with the LA-1K not using the correct band (not auto selecting). It gets confused with the certain frequencies including the 60M frequencies and does not know to use 40 or 80 to tune. It would be very helpful to have a 60-meter selection on the amp. I am also using 1.08S Stephan Barott N7QDZ

New LA 1K delivered with firmware 1.09E
I took delivery a couple weeks ago of a new LA 1K amp from Palstar. As the title says it was delivered with firmware 1.09E. The latest firmware available for download on the Palstar website is 1.08S. Does anyone have information on what enhancements or fixes are in version 1.09E?

NEW LA-1K OWNER UPDATE
9
I finally got my LA-1K this week and have it in line. I am running it on a dedicated 120 V 15 AMP circuit. So far no problems at that voltage. 20 watts drive, 600 PEP output. 25 watts drive, 750 PEP output. 30 watts drive , 900 PEP output. At 30 watts drive the Id is 31.1 After one hour of casual rag chewing on 75 meters this morning the amp temperature reached 36C. That was with 20 watts drive, 600 watts out. 90% of the time I will operate the amp I will not drive it with more than 25 watts drive. If they can't copy me with 750 watts then I better get on the phone and order some bigger antennas! So it appears that the amp runs fine on 120 V. Yes I know that if I was running it on 240 the current draw would be less. However I do not operate the amp for long periods of time so the extra current draw on 120 V is not going to cause my hydro bill to sky rocket! A shout out to Bob W3RJP for all of your help via email. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all of the group members. 73, Rick VE3PP

No power out solved
9
Good news to share: My LA – 1K amplifier was sending no power out and was not band switching as it had previously done successfully for months. I replaced the Palstar LA-1K to yaesu band data radio interface cable, and my LA-1K amplifier is again fully functional. Bill AG5ZN

LA-1K on the way, sometime................
2
A while back, I ordered the LA-1K. It should be here soon to Christmas time. The LA will replace and my Dentron 160-10L and Ameriton, Model ARB-704 setup that can be used as a back up. Don't think that the 704 will be needed with the LA?? I am running a Yaesu FTDX-10, to the HF-Auto - not always used, to various antennas from 160m to 6m, Win 11 where most all programs are ran in Win 8 mode, DXLabs Suite, WSJT, JTAlert, and other software. I like DXing, contesting, SSB, CW, FT4/FT8, and RTTY. What can I do to prep for the LA-1K arrival? After its arrival? Cable interface connections? Software needed? Sorry, I need to go back and review what I bought a long time ago. Got a good memory, but it is short! LOL Steven

NEW LA-1K OWNER
24
Hello Everyone I will be picking up my new LA-1K sometime early in December. A few questions for current owners. I presently have a dedicated 120 V line into my shack, with a 15 amp breaker. For years I ran an Ameritron AL-80A on this circuit, up to 800+ watts at tines with no issues. So I am wondering if the LA-1K will be fine at reduced power output (700-800 watts PEP on SSB) on that same circuit. I will eventually get around to running 220 into the shack once I pick up some wire etc etc. But for now I would like to run it off the 120 V line. Does anyone foresee any problems with that? Thanks, 73, Rick VE3PP

DPD (Digital Per-Distortion)
5
I am using an ICOM IC-7610 transceiver and ICOM has released a software update to provide DPD (Digital Per-Distortion) in addressing non-linearity in RF power amplifiers. Is this something which needs addressing with the Palstar LA-1K ? Thomas NE7X... Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) is a technique to increase linearity or compensate for non-linearity in power amplifiers. Power amplifiers are critical in communication systems and it is crucial to improve their efficiency and overall performance. DPD is a cost-effective linearization technique which aims to provide improved linearity, better efficiency, and take full advantage of power amplifiers. Digital Pre-Distortion applies inverse distortion, using a pre-distorter, at the input signal of the PA to cancel the distortion generated by the power amplifier. This requires knowing the PA characteristics accurately with effective implementation for successful DPD functioning. Proper implementation can show improvements of up to 40% in PA efficiency used in wireless base stations.

DRIVE POWER REQUIRED
3
Hello Everyone I am going to order a LA-1K today. First solid state amp for me. I am curious as to the various drive power that is required with this amp. For example 25 watts drive, what is the output from the amp, Etc etc. For now I will be running mine off 120 V until I can pull a 220 line into the shack. Thanks, Rick VE3PP

Morgan systems M303 coaxial surge suppressors used with the LA1k amp
5
I am buying a LA1K used amp this coming week and for lightning protection outside the house I have tow coaxial lines that each have a Morgan System M303 arrestor in line before the coax comes into the room. Bot ate mounted to a copper plate and also grounded with "6 wire to 8 ft ground rods. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using these arrestors where a SS amp might have issue passing a signal threw them cause the have a choke system inside that bleeds some of the static to ground and therefore just maybe that would create an issue with SS finals. I live in Florida and these arrestors have been working fine with an Acom 1000 for three years, I used the Alpha Delta ones before but they seemed to have issues with the weather down here with varying SWR at times but once I installed the Morgan systems jobs no issues. They are very similar to the Array Solution jobs and the original design was taken from the I.C.E company that is no longer. Any input would be great, TNX. Jim KX2T

Inferior Design Implementation
13
To sum things up... As stated in Ray's post https://groups.io/g/la1k/message/1261 an SWR as high as 2:1 is acceptable, and yet Paul (NO0T) observed that his LA-1K went to bypass as SWR went to 2:1 to protect the finals. This clearly demonstrated yet another case of *inferior design implementation* found on the LA-1K amplifier. In his defense of the LA-1K, Kent (K9ZTV) writing, in part, "My Elecraft KPA500 folds back to half-output at 2:1 and goes into the red zone (cautioned as "critical" in the manual) above 2:1." in his post https://groups.io/g/la1k/message/1262 yesterday. But, the KPA500 Owner's Manual: https://ftp.elecraft.com/KPA/Manuals%20Downloads/E740150%20KPA500%20Owner's%20Manual%20Rev%20E1.pdf states, in part, on Page 35 " For ease in reading the critical SWR levels, t he SWR LEDs are green from 1 to 1.5. The 1.5 to 2.1 SWR LEDs are yellow and the LEDs for SWR s above 2.1 are red." It is *important to note* Elecraft stating that " LEDs for SWR s *above 2.1 are red* " as opposed to " goes into *the red zone* (cautioned as "critical" in the manual) *above 2:1* " as Kent observed in his Elecraft KPA500. In an attempt to obtain clarifications from Kent in my post https://groups.io/g/la1k/message/1264 yesterday, of which I haven't received a response as of this writing, I had amended it to point out that the Owner's Manual of the Elecraft KPA1500 (their top-of-the-line amp/ATU machine) states " SWR bargraph: The SWR LEDs are green from 1 to 1.5. The 1.5 to 2 LEDs are yellow and the LEDs above 2 are red" and " The bargraphs are color-coded green for normal, yellow for marginal and red for excessive levels. Excessive levels may trigger a fault and switch the KPA1500 to STBY" on Page 18 and Page 27, respectively. It is *important to note* the Elecraft KPA1500 may trigger a fault and *switch to STBY* if and only if it encounters excessive levels ( *above 2:1* ) of SWR. An SWR *as high as 2:1* is acceptable for the Elecraft KPA1500. SWR reference material for all to consider: https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/tis/info/pdf/q1106037.pdf 73, Ray KJ5MI

High SWR causing "Bypass SWR" error when in STBY
12
My LA-1K has developed an issue in the internal SWR protect circuit. When I key the amplifier in STBY mode with only 10 watts drive, the amplifier sees a HIGH SWR on the output and the internal protect circuit places the amplifier into "Bypass SWR" protect error mode. I placed a 50 ohm dummy load direct on the amplifier output RF connectors (1/2/3) and it still does the same. In the past this error was "Intermittent" however now its happing 100% of the time. It appears there is a failure with the internal SWR protect circuit of the amplifier. Has anyone else seen this issue? Thanks, Thomas NE7X...
