G16 Leak Fix
3
I thought I would share this project with you all. I cut out part of the floor on my Gloucester 16 to inspect the keel trunk and find out where the water was coming in. I found leakage around the keel bolt, and the trunk was broken on the top. Not sure how that happened, maybe in a grounding. The hole for the keel bolt was enlarged on one side. I filled in the enlarged hole with epoxy putty, and glassed over the whole area with 6 layers of 9oz cloth with G-flex epoxy. Curing now.

Water in cabin
3
I just bailed and sucked (shop-vac!) about 100 litres of water from my N16's cabin. It seems to have come from the rain, not the sea. Where are common places for deck leaks? Has anyone installed a pluggable drain through the transom on their N16? Is there a plank of wood in the transom, and if so what kind and how thick? Halden

Electric motor for N16
5
In case others are considering using a trolling motor with their N16... On Sept 14, I evaluated an electric trolling motor as alternate propulsion in case the wind is too weak, too strong, or the mast breaks. The motor's seller claims 55 pounds thrust without saying what boat speed is associated with that number. I measured thrust using a spring scale at the dock: 46 pounds. Power consumption was 23 A at 25.4 V from 4 14Ah LFP batteries in series-parallel. That's 584 W = 0.78 HP. The motor propulsion was sufficient to maneuver the boat around the dock with very low wind. It was also able to maintain headway in approximately 5 knots headwind with sails hoisted and flapping, sheets loose. I doubt it would have enough power to be of any use if the wind was at 10 knots. I bought an 86 pound thrust version of the same motor and hope to try it later this week. I have used a 4 hp 2 cycle Evinrude on this boat before, but it has a leak in the carburetor that I haven't fixed yet. Cheers, Halden

Newport 16 mainsail bolt rope loose
5
The main's bolt rope is sewn in place at the tack and head for the first 20-25 cm or so. In between these, it's loose. It gets jammed while hoisting the sail. It seems like maybe the rope and the sail are of different lengths. Once hoisted, the sail is baggy near the luff. Is the bolt rope overstretched? Can this be fixed? Thanks Halden

Removing rust stains from sail
After resetting the bolt rope in my Neptune 16's mainsail, I thought I'd try to improve its aesthetics. The big rust stains, probably from sitting in a damp place under some rusty chain for years seemed like likely victims. I sprinkled a bit of Whink (tm) (hydrofluoric acid and denatonium benzoate) which didn't seem to have any effect. While waiting, I brushed a bit on the toilet bowl's rust stain which came off in a few seconds. With low expectations, I let it sit on the sail for a while and worked on something else. A half hour later, it seemed to have cleared up a bit. 3 hours later, the stains were almost fully gone! I carefully rinsed the sail in the bathtub and hung it to dry. HF is really nasty stuff, so if you try this, read the instructions on the bottle and be careful! Halden

Neptune 16 1985
3
I am a new owner of a Neptune 16, The boat is sound, but I had to redo the centerboard cable, My question is how and where is the cable attached to the centerboard, and can access be gained from inside the boat. I need to check the pivot and the cable attachment. I am 72 and don’t have much assistance. I know that I could CAREEN the boat if it was on the ground, but am reluctant to go that route if not necessary. I am in Texas on the gulf coast near Freeport tx. Sent from Mail for Windows

Almost there!

Just finished a 99% refit...all new paint, inside and out, new deck fittings, new cleats, new venting, redone brightwork, all new running rigging, etc. Learned a ton and had fun, other than painting with Interlux Perfection 2-Part. Stay AWAY from that stuff! Here are a few before and after pics. -Geoff

My new to me Neptune 16, whole 'nother thread!
3
Hi all, I just got a N16 for free off CL! You will be shocked to hear that it is going to need some work. I have already found some parts and info on the FB groups that will be very helpful, but so often information that has been posted is so hard to access that it is lost, and has to be constantly re-stated in the feed. That is why I am posting here on a google group, which has better long term access of info. I hope to post about the process of rebuilding the boat to give back a bit to the internet which has helped me so much on so many things like this! Anton

Hi everyone, Many folks are including prior emails in their posts. This clutters the reader's screen. When reviewing posts in the groups.io window, one can choose to view the thread history. Thus, including the referenced message itself is not necessary. I understand that members can post messages by "reply"ing to an email from the group. If you post messages that way, simply delete the prior content before sending the email. Please review the posting guidelines in this group's "Description" page. If you don't like one of them, or if you don't like the group description or would like to broaden or narrow the scope of material discussed here, that's fine. Just launch a thread to discuss the item of concern. If we all want to change something about our forum, let's do it. It takes time for me to edit all these messages to remove the extraneous content. Please be respectful of my time. -your moderator

New to me Neptune 16
20
I just got a Neptune 16 yesterday, not put in the water yet, hopefully this afternoon or tomorrow. I see that this group isn’t very active, so posting just to see if anyone still reads it. Let me know if you do follow, and still have an N-16, or parts, or advice? Gary Shawnigan Lake, BC

Cabin window replacement
7
20+ years of sunshine turned iNept’s cabin windows white. Today I started on the replacement project. It turns out that the hull thickness varies around the window perimeter, so the assembler used screws that are longer than needed and then cut them off even with the acorn nuts. By bending the screws and distorting the threads during that cut, the worker achieved additional assurance that those fasteners wouldn’t come loose on their own. My error was to try turning the screws from the outside before going inside to grab the nuts. Consequentially, the screws became unstuck and I had to hold each screw from the outside while turning the nut with a ratchet on the inside – an awkward stretch. It went faster on the port side; I didn’t mess with the screws at first; I went right to the acorn nuts and was able to get all but one of them off, working only from the inside. Cutting replacement acrylic will be fairly easy. But I could use some help dealing with the trim. It became brittle and broke in several places over the years. Is there any other material I could use for the trim to help keep the window and its sealant in place? Any other solution ideas? Thanks! Halden

October sailing
2
Hey fellow trailer sailers, Just wanted to share some pics of my 5 day vacation at the Chesapeake. We rented a home in Sherwood MD and sailed each day out the Harris Creek to the Bay. Great weather 65 to 70, light winds 4-7 mph. Not the last trip of the season! I’m determined to keep sailing until November. I’m looking forward to pulling and servicing the swing keel this winter... I know I’ll have lots of questions. Take care all. - Bill -- Bill Chain G-16 Carlisle, PA

Masthead block and sheave configuration
My 1981 Neptune 16's masthead sheave (for the main halyard) doesn't turn. I took it apart and found out why. The block's inside surface is rough and the nylon sheave fits tightly. Is there supposed to be a pair of thin pieces of metal between the cast aluminium block and the nylon sheave? Also, there is no sleeve or other bushing around the bolt that holds it in. Should there be? The photos below illustrate what I have. Thanks in advance for someone's guidance! -Halden

Why do these sailboats have so many variants and names?
2
From the yahoo group description: "C. William Lapworth (of Cal 40 fame) originally designed her in the mid-sixties for Robert Dorris as a daysailer that would sell against the Lido 14 in southern California. She was called the COLUMBIA 15 back then, and had no cuddy. Dorris sold the molds to Dick Lindsey of Lindsey Plastics who asked Lapworth to add a cabin and renamed the boat the NEWPORT 16 (at the time Lindsey Plastics was building the Newport 20,27,30 and 41). The Newport 16 name stuck, even though the molds changed hands a few times after that. The molds were bought by Enterprise Yachts of FL (ENTERPRISE NEWPORT 16), Award Boats of Melbourne, FL (AWARD NEWPORT 16) and then later came into the hands of Newport Boats . In 1976 Newport Boats was purchased by Lockley Manufacturing and became Lockley Newport Boats (LOCKLEY NEWPORT 16). In 1981 the molds were sold to Gloucester Yachts where it became the GLOUCESTER 16. Newport Boats, of California, in existence at least as early as 1964, was a builder of fiberglass dinghies and daysailers. They also had a factory in Gloucester, VA (Mobjack Mfg.). The Company was purchased first by Browning Arms in 1965, then by Elgin National Industries who had also purchased Lindsey Plastics and Enterprise Yachts. After Elgin bought Lindsey Plastics Dick Lindsey started Lindsey Yachts in Miami and continued to offer the LINDSEY NEWPORT 16. Capital Yachts Corporation was founded in 1971 when Jon Williams and Bill Smith bought the tooling of the Newport Fleet from Elgin National Industries. Together, with the aid of designers Gary Mull and Cuthbertson & Cassian, they formed a new and updated fleet of Newport sailboats which were manufactured at their plant in Harbor City, California. Capital Yachts modified the Newport 16 by enlarging the cabin and named it the CAPITAL NEPTUNE 16."
