Hi Folks, All this time, I thought this was a closed group but seems like it's set to: "Archive is visible to anyone." I think we need to change the settings so that it's members only for both posting AND reading posts. We need a place where we can share information with each other that is no on public view. OAEF meeting today
Hi everyone, An agenda for today's meeting of Older Adults Education Forever is attached to this email. Please feel free to suggest changes. Here is the information about today's meeting: Meeting of July 14, 2024 West County Meeting: 1:30-2;00 PM General Meeting: 2:00-4:00 PM Both meetings will use this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83636555477?pwd=OWdTVGsyYW1RRGk5OTA0Yk9lN2RWZz09 Meeting ID: 836 3655 5477 Passcode: 576387 A note about the time: Yesterday a member reminded me that this meeting was scheduled earlier than usual, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. I actually had that on my calendar, but thought it was a mistake, so I sent a notice for the usual time, 2:00 to 4:00 PM. I didn't hear from anyone else about the time difference, so, in hopes of avoiding as much confusion as possible, let's keep the meeting at the old time 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Maybe we could try to end the meeting a little earlier than usual. I truly apologize for any inconvenience this causes. Kristen

Fw: Upcoming Roundtable | Adult education: Overlooked and underfunded 2
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: EdSource <conference@...> Date: Thu, Jul 11, 2024 at 4:01 PM Subject: Upcoming Roundtable | Adult education: Overlooked and underfunded To: <leslie.reckler@...> July 25 at 2 p.m. Upcoming Roundtable Adult education: Overlooked and underfunded July 25 at 2 p.m. Adult education classes offer a lifeline for Californians who want to get their GED, acquire training for a career, hone their English skills or study for their citizenship test. These classes can dramatically improve the quality of life for adults — and their children. But funding for this work is precarious, and adult education is often one of the first areas targeted for cuts in tight budget times. As the state grapples with tighter budgets, join EdSource’s Emma Gallegos and Zaidee Stavely in conversation with a panel of experts about the unique potential of adult education and what lies ahead. SAVE YOUR SPOT NOTE: If you are unable to attend the live roundtable, you can still register and we will send you the recording the following day. Speakers Kathy Locke, ESL family literacy teacher, Oakland Unified Steve Curiel, principal, Huntington Beach Adult School John Werner, executive director, Sequoias Adult Education Consortium More speakers to be announced soon. Purely virtual - from your home via Zoom. RSVP THE LONG-TERM HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IS ON LIFE SUPPORT. MORE THAN TWO MILLION CASES OF ELDER ABUSE AND NEGLECT ARE REPORTED EVERY YEAR. I am just one of the millions who had absolutely no idea how broken and corrupt the nursing home system truly is until I attempted to navigate it. -- Susie Singer Carter, filmmaker Join Gray Panthers of Berkeley and the East Bay, this Wednesday, June 26 at 1:30pm for our monthly Speaker Meeting. Member Nancy Stevens and Hollywood filmmaker, Susie Singer Carter will share their first hand experiences and activism in the ongoing nursing home crisis. It's free and all are welcome! RSVP below to get the link. Nancy Stevens inspires many of us with her intense commitment to challenge and change the long-term care nursing where she lives in southern California, and by her networking and advocacy with Gray Panthers and change agents around the country. Nancy will update us on California and Congressional legislative campaigns and a new initiative called "The EINSTEIN Option" (Evaluating Innovation in Nursing Homes to End Instiutionalization) from the Live Oak Project, bringing together longtime creative visionaries in the field of long-term care. Nancy will interview one of her own inspirations, Hollywood actress and filmmaker, Susie Singer Carter (video link). Here's what Carter writes about her soon-to-be-released documentary No Country for Old People: No Country for Old People is a feature length documentary that pulls the curtain back on the nursing home/long-term care industry to reveal a decades-old systemic crisis that has been enabled by the nation’s pervasive ageism & ableism. For over 50 years, care for our most vulnerable has stealthily turned into a cutthroat world of private equity and real estate investment trust-backed nursing homes. To put it bluntly: follow the money. There is a lot. No Country for Old People chronicles the last harrowing 6 months of my mother’s life in a 5-star nursing home in Los Angeles in 2022 and features powerful testimonials from caregivers, residents, and frontline providers [and] illuminating interviews from the most respected experts on Medicare, Medicaid, Hospice ... to understand where, why, how these abuses happen, and what can be done. Unfortunately, my experience is not at all unique. I am just one of the millions who had absolutely no idea how broken and corrupt the nursing home system truly is until I attempted to navigate it. Thanks for coming out this Wednesday; RSVP below. Look for summer socials, more speakers, and follow-up on the Social Housing Movement. Keep in touch! Speaker Meetings are regular gatherings on the Fourth Wednesday of most months. We focus on special topics with guest speakers as well as highlighting Gray Panther and partner activities For many Berkeley events of interest, see Kelly Hammargren's Activist Diary in the Berkeley Daily Planet, at https://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/ - click Current Issue for the latest updates. Currently the Monthly Meeting and Board Meetings are by zoom or phone-in but we are scheduling occasional outdoor and safe in-person gatherings in 2024! Get in touch with any questions: 5

The May revise came out last week and there were no proposed cuts to noncredit older adult programs. Since the budget revise does not look as bad as we were worried about for noncredit, there is not a need for CCCEOA to mobilize at this time, as discussed last week. We’ll keep a close eye on things as they progress, but for now it is looking OK. Adult Day Sector in Fiscal Crisis ------------------- important to know about
Good article in this month's AARP magazine: https://states.aarp.org/california/adult-day-health-fiscal-crisis#:~:text=But%20the%20industry%20is%20struggling%3B%20nationally%2C%20adult%20day,pandemic%20shutdowns%20and%20a%20meager%20Medicaid%20reimbursement%20rate. From the article: CA ranks No. 1 in terms of capactiy to serve older adults in adult day centers on AARP's most recent long-term care xcorecard. But the indistry is struggling: nationally, adult day services dwindled by 11.5 percent in 2020-2021, the AARP scorecard shows, with COVID-10 pandemic closures playing a role. Adult Day Centers typically pick up participants at their homes and offer basic medical care, meals and activieis such as exercise and music. they help older adults maintain independence and often delay entry into more expensive long-term care. They also give family caregivers a needed break. ---- It is important to know about: 1. All the groups, agencies, places that serve Older Adults. We need to understand their services, funding, how we can work together in alliances, where our goals align, whagt their challenges are. 2. The challenges faced by other groups. For example. the pandemic hit Adult Day Centers hard. We need to think about the impact of the pandemic on older adults - and the attitudes inherent in the larger cultural response. Was there a sort of, "Well, there's old so it's okay if many day or get sick or live in isolation?" If there was, how might that impact our policy work going forward? Because beneath decisions lie feelings - sorrow, guilt, worry, fear, etc. It may be that legislators don't want to touch that the issue of serving Older Adults because of the feeling that this was a "neccesary failure" and they don't want that taint on their record or reputation now. It's important to be aware of our feelings - have and process them -- and then be aware of others feelings -- in creating relationships with allies, legislators, etc. I think in general, in Adult Ed, there is a certain amount of defensiveness on the part of policy makers, legislators, because on some level, they know they effed up and/or really hurt lots of people - even if they feel they had no other choice - or that they made the best choice possible to them at the time - given the thinking and facts of that time. When dealing with folks who made decisions that harmed us or others, it's super important to be aware of how THEY are handling those feelings - because they can show up in ways that make it hard to move forward. Agenda suggestion: Letter to AARP
Hi Folks, "AARP Seeks Your Input: Tell us what goals you think AARP sholuld pursue to improve the lives of people as they age. Your input helps guide our efforts to influence lawmakers and regulators across the country. Send your ideas to policy@...." I suggest we 1. Send individual emails to that email address 2. Send a formal letter from our group - with multiple signatures - to that email address Irma Beserra Nunez was able to get AARP's support when she was leading the effort to save CA State Funding for Adult Ed Older Adults classes. Important to remember: While funding was more or less lost, Irma was able to secure a loophole - where classes for older adults could be state funded if these classes also benefited school age children. In policy work, such loopholes are extremely important. They are often a beginning place for new efforts to make headway. Cynthia
