YDNA warehouse
There has been some talk on the U106 forum about an email that went out to some YDNA Warehouse (https://ydna-warehouse.org/) members telling them they needed to reset their password. This caused some confusion as some people thought it was a scam email. But it is real and came from James Kane (who manages that site). They are revamping the site to make it easier to use and people who have not logged on in a long time need to update their password. This site will serve as the main repository for all of the people who wanted to either be on Alex Williamson's Big Tree, wanted to have a way to compare results to people who have tested on other sites, wanted their data backed up somewhere else in case the place you tested goes out of business, or having your anonymous data able to be used by researchers for their papers and studies. Iain McDonald posted that he actually uses this data quite often to generate TMRCAs or to examine mutations to answer questions on the U106 forum or privately. Iain also notes on his website "The Y-DNA Warehouse is collecting geographical, genealogical and genetic data from members. We can use this data to obtain statistical information about broader haplogroups, including computing TMRCAs, but also calibrating "molecular clocks" within that data, and reproducing migration patterns across the last 5000 years of human history." If you had wondered if the email was real, or have never uploaded your data to the warehouse and would like to please go ahead and either follow his password reset instructions or make a new account on the site if you never had one. If you have an old account once you reset your password you should be able to see all of the kits you have uploaded data for and what data they have for each one. I found for some of the kits I manage I hadn't uploaded all the different tests I had so I went ahead and did that. If you have any questions or need help, just let me know. Chris

Age estimates and another potential new member?
5
Hi all First, the potential member - last year I was contacted by Robert Pinnington about his tree. At that stage he had the 111 test and was a close match, but subsequently I have discovered (only recently) that he has the BigY results, and R-FT356044 has been created for the two of us. Prior to that, my closest match was Max Pennington under R-FT356010 which was created in 2020 when my BigY was added. I'm not sure if Robert is a member here, and I will email him to ask but this might be the quickest way to find out. Robert has been tracing his Pennington line, but it's a bit sticky; however now I know he's a close match I am practically certain that my guess of being a Pennington through a non paternity event in 1818 is correct. With a few more clues on his tree and mine we might even be able to match the trees, which would be wonderful! However - that brings me to the time estimates. It's possible that the most recent common ancestor was further back than we'll be able to trace; I would like to get a better feel for the likely time since the split., if such is possible. I guess the range may be big - but I don't know. Chris sent me a way to look at this in an email, but I am not quite sure how to apply it to myself and Robert from the results I see in the block tree. Ideas anyone? (Especially Chris!) Hope you are all well, it's been a while since there was anything on here. Cheers John

Hi All, Did anyone notice the message left today on the U106 group by a J Cook? Chris do you know about him, might he already be someone you’ve chatted with? If not, how can we invite him to join us? I’m in the middle of a family crisis, I’ll surface asap. Hope everyone is doing well. Cynthia

FGC11784 and FGC42045
I'm not sure everyone here follows the U106 discussion group so I wanted to post this here. Iain was speculating about the age and location of SNPs FGC11784 and FGC42045. Since almost everyone who has a kit in this group comes down through those SNPs I thought it might be of interest. You can always look at the file of the S6881 Group Tree that I have posted in the files section that shows the order of the SNPs if you want to see how close or far you are from these two SNPs. Here is what he said: "Please do understand that what is below is *very* speculative. R-FGC11784 is quite a large clade for its age. Its downstream participants are strongly British, and specifically English: 52% of R-FGC11784 men list "England" or "UK" as a country of origin, compared to 16% of R-U106 overall. By comparison, only 3% list "Scotland", "Wales" or either Northern or Republic of Ireland, compared to 9% of R-U106 overall. This suggests migrations that only affected England, rather than the rest of the British Isles. European R-FGC11784 records include Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, France and Italy (8% of testers). This low percentage is partly due to our American testing bias, but the European percentage is also low compared to R-U106 overall (20%). While this could suggest a British origin for R-FGC11784, the majority of these European results appear in the upper (basal) clades of the R-FGC11784 phylogenic tree, and it's not until the major clade R-FGC42045 that the clade becomes very significantly British (2% of testers are European, 53% are English/UK). R-FGC42045 testers probably share a common British ancestor, dating back to the first millennium AD, but British testers from elsewhere in R-FGC11784 may have a different entry point in history. The distribution of European testers has moderate significance. They are distributed around the same North Sea coasts as many Germanic tribes, but notably we have yet to find any Scandinavian results. We'd expect these to make up about a quarter of continental testers. This may be due to a lack of continental testers, but probably indicates a small Scandinavian R-FGC11784 population, and a continental European origin for R-FGC11784, somewhere in a Germanic population. The lone Italian family is common in clades which experienced a significant post-Roman migration. Based on this information, if I had to make a guess, I would be thinking Anglo-Saxon invasions of England. At face value, the evidence here seems fairly clear-cut for that. However, there's always a danger in using averaged evidence across a whole haplogroup, based on scant and heavily biased data, to try and pick out evidence for a particular family. Not everyone follows the norm, so please don't take this as the only option, and be aware that future evidence may change these conclusions."

Short Sale on BigY test
I'm not sure if everyone here is also on the U106 discussion board so I'll repost something here just in case anyone is interested. FTDNA is having a short sale that will expire on 2/25. It's an extra $25 off the regular prices for BigY tests. The sale prices are below. This also includes those who wish to upgrade from a BigY 500 to BigY 700 test. BIG Y700 for a new testee with no YDNA tests - $449 minus $25 = $424.00 BIG Y500 to BIG Y700 upgrade - $209 minus $25 = $184.00 Y111 to BIG Y700 upgrade - $239 minus $25 = $214.00 Y67 to BIG Y700 upgrade - $279 minus $25 = $254.00 Y37 to BIG Y700 upgrade - $339 minus $25 = $314.00 Y25 to BIG Y700 upgrade - $389 minus $25 = $364 Y12 to BIG Y700 upgrade - $399 minus $25 = $374

TMRCA calculations

I don't know how many of us belong to the R1b-U106 but Iain has been discussing his latest thoughts and work on aging the new Y700 stuff. https://groups.io/g/R1b-U106/message/1096 I copied this link but don't know if you can see it without being a member. You can try. Jeff and Cynthia I thought you would be interested to know Iain is getting into looking at this subject.

S6881 Tree
16
I have posted the most recent version of the S6881 tree that I keep based on BigY testing. Since FTDNA limits us to seeing only matches who we have less than 30 SNP mismatches with we lose sight of a lot of the group. For this reason, I put together an Excel spreadsheet type tree with as many of the results as I know. It is quite large with over 70 testers. I'm sharing it in the files section for anyone else who wants to use it. Chris

Data Warehouse upload
19
Please remember as you get your Y700 results to upload your data to the Data Warehouse if you wish to share your results with the U106 admins and some others. If you never uploaded your Y500 data you can do that too. The instructions from the U106 project are below. If you have any issues or questions let me know. Thanks. Scroll down on your FTDNA page to Big Y Results. Click on that, then look to the far right, and click on the blue Download Raw Data button. Then, in the pop-up window, towards the left, click on the green Download VCF button. Then upload the zipped file, as it is, to the “Y-DNA Data Warehouse”: https://ydna-warehouse.org/instructions.html Joining this effort will help us research your particular clade, identifying new relationships closer to the present day. We work with other haplogroup projects, Family Tree DNA and external organizations to make your new clades known worldwide. Over 1000 of you have already participated.

Probable new member

Hi Chris, Jeffrey Tomer Graves has been in contact with me as he shows a match with Keith and John Joseph on his Y111. I told him he should do a Big Y if possible and he has now just today received his results. He shows Terminal SNP BY16322 just the same as Keith and John J. Unless I'm totally all wet, I was thinking he too should belong to our s6881 group. His email is rwdrive@... I'm assuming you will need to be who invites him. Mary E

Re Logging on —R1b-S6881@groups.io
3
Hi all, Passing this onto you after a discussion with Chris When I tapped the link in the email invite it brought me to Groups.oi. I’m already a member of two other groups there. When I pulled down the menu bar listing my groups S6881 was not listed. If this happens to you here is what I did that worked for me. I ran a search for S6881 in the search box and our group immediately popped up. I selected it. Then, I was told I had to asked to JOIN. I tapped and then a few minutes later I received an email notifying me I was now a member. Neither Chris nor I know if you will run into this process of needing to request to become a member. If so, try my solution. If that doesn’t work send Chris an email and she’ll help out when she is back from vacation. Cynthia Begin forwarded message:

move update
So we are at a stuck spot at the moment with the move. The Yahoo site has been extremely slow and it is causing issues for the new provider to be able to move all the groups they have to move. At the moment all group transfers are on hold. I was originally told the cutoff date for the move would be December 1st. I don't know if there will be any change to that date or if they are even going to be able to get the transfers going again. If our transfer can't go through then the group message history won't come across nor the files and photos. I can repost any of the files I've put up without any problem. If anyone else is concerned about any files or photos they've posted then make sure you download what you have on our Yahoo Group or make sure you have another copy in your computer files as you might have to upload them manually to the new site when we get it established. In the worst-case scenario I will manually send you each an invitation to the new site and you can choose to accept it or not as you wish. It would be a new site at that point with no history but we can reload what we want and start over again. I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow for a week so I'll wait and see if they resolve the issue, and if not, I'll deal with it when I return. Thanks for your patience. Chris

Moving group
5
Hi All, Since Yahoo is going to pretty much end groups I'm going to attempt to move this group to Groups.io like the U106 group did and some other genetics groups did. It may take me a little time as it isn't a real quick process. It is possible you may not want to continue on with the group after the move but for now I'm going to attempt to move the whole group just like it is. We'll see how well it all comes across and if you don't want to continue that is fine. There is a group of people who do want to continue on so we'll get at least this step done so we can go on. Thanks for all your support and involvement in the past. Chris

Digest Number 70
4
Dear Chris and Jim, Thank you for speaking up and letting us know this is happening. As for me I hope we can save the files etc for the future. Including your incredible work that both of you have contributed. The tree would be a big loss. Peter shared ancestry HX that would be a big loss. This news is new for me. Perhaps for others here as well. With every group scattering in different directions our opportunity to learn more is diminishing. That is a huge loss. You both have weighed in with ideas. I’d defer to each of you as the experts on S6881. I have two Y700 kits but I don’t know what to do with the data. Why is this happening? Why is Yahoo dropping the groups??

What Now?
The U106 group has gone (is going) to groups.io. The new group is set up, though the old one isn’t quite dead yet. Given the amount of traffic here I suggest using the existing U106 group at groups.io (I guess most of us are already members of u106). Where Now?
Dear Jim Liptrot and Chris Noble, I have not been following this news about Yahoo disallowing uploads and deleting historic postings. I see that there are various suggestions about continuing. Do you know what proposals there are from Iain McDonald, Chris Noble and the other leaders of the group ? What would be the most important historic postings to save or transfer to a new group ? Much of the group discussion is too technical for me to understand but I do follow the general trend especially the periodic overview explanations from Iain McDonald and would be reluctant to lose contact. Kind regards, Peter Latham.

I find the FTDNA block list hard to navigate. Try this one: https://www.ytree.net/DisplayTree.php?blockID=3264 They aren't exactly the same, but close. I miss Ian MacDonald's age estimates. Jim
