Outboard conversion
Is anyone aware of a Tartan 27 that has tried the outboard installation into the aft cockpit locker? Like those done by James Baldwin on Alberg 30, Cape Dory 27, Pearson Triton, etc. He has stated that a dimension of 29" is needed from the transom to the rudder post for a tilt-up motor to fit, which on the T27 appears to be very close. Tartan 27 mast 7
I am in need of a new mast for my 1967 TARTAN 27. Anyone have one "laying around"? Any suggestions on what to consider when evaluating used masts? I am new to sailing and have had this sailboat since 2020. I love this gal and want to keep her going, but the repair guys in my area are looking at this as a "salvage" situation. Any help for a novice would be greatly appreciated!

Centerboard necessary? 3
I do have to agree with the purists of you T27 Owners who say that the boat sails better with the centerboard than without. That said, I also raced my T27 for a bit and I can remember one light wind race where we did quite well without using the board (something about the current in our Hudson River that goes up and down). Also, if you look at boats from a similar vintage and heft you might find that there are very few builders that included centerboards into their design. Many of the boats that were contemporaries of our boats have almost the same hull shape but no centerboard. CAPE DORY 27 - sailboatdata CAPE DORY 25D - sailboatdata ARIEL 26 (PEARSON) - sailboatdata While S&S (Sparkman & Stephens) did not design the above boats, they all copied each others designs (somewhat). Who copied who is a question I can't answer. S&S considered the centerboard necessary in order to differentiate their design from the competition and I believe that is borne out in the sailing of the boat (with centerboard). Without a centerboard it might as well be a Cape Dory 27 or an old Pearson Ariel (both nice boats btw). For your consideration. Sure, you can “sail”, if that’s what you want to call it, without it. But there is simply no way you can point as high, close to the wind, as a comparable boat with one. Go find yourself one and have a race. You won’t be winning. If you want to put the sails up and look pretty, sure, but you are simply not using the boat to it’s fullest potential without the centerboard. The boat was designed by one of the most famous naval architects in the world. If it sailed well without it, it wouldn’t be there. Tartan #616 here. I race “Rosie” 2-3 times a week…. I use my center board all the time. A must in winds that are over 12+ Otherwise way to much weather helm. A shame not to be able to have it. Todd

Daggerboard Troubles 24
Good Evening, My cable for my daggerboard has rusted off. I am going to dive on her tomorrow to see if the board has dropped out of the trunk and is in the down position. Has anyone else had this happen? What are alternatives or what has been tried before: Feed a new cable down thru the trunk and re-attached to the board if she has come out of the trunk…what attachment pieces would be needed with the cable at the attachment point? Temporarily get the dagger board back up….by running a line or multiple lines under the board and securing to the rub rail? Will the daggerboard saw thru those lines? Once I have the lines under the daggerboard, is it possible to raise the board from the deck? Could I have her lifted out of the water and just remove the board all together? What have others done both successfully and unsuccessfully so I can weigh my options intelligently? Any and all advice are welcome. Patrick SV Petrel – 1954 Tartan 27

Centerboard Troubles
Hi Patrick, Some further thoughts about the T27 and it's centerboard. There was a company (tartanparts.com - I believe) that was selling a replacement for around $1500 or so. You don't want to lose your centerboard. I for one, believe that your board is (hopefully) stuck in the trunk. If the centerboard were to fall out of the boat, that would mean that the support pin (or fulcrum) that holds the board in the trunk is broken or compromised as well. If, by some means the centerboard managed to escape your boat it will be worth it to you to hire a diver and take a GPS reading near the spot you think it might have gone missing. If you don't want the centerboard, I'm sure someone on this list might buy it from you. Sort of a rare, valuable commodity. I am with the others that say that the T27 sails beautifully with the centerboard. The boat makes more leeway (drift) without the centerboard and it turns much easier with the board deployed. That said, I believe we did well in a race where we never deployed the centerboard. If you race your T27 the centerboard is sort of the secret weapon. You can also steer the boat by adjusting the centerboard. Farymann a30 shaft coupling 22
Hi, I'm looking for a shaft coupling for a farymann a30. It's a rubber component about 3 inches long that connects between the transmission and prop shaft. The Farymann was a common engine on the T27-2 I'm running into a lot of dead ends and coming here in case someone has repowered and has one laying around, or perhaps has solved this issue themselves. Clear Window/Port Replacement For a 1967 Boat 8
Does anyone have any experience in replacing the 50+ year old, scratched and crazed porthole windows on each side of the main cabin? I got the interior screws out of the aluminum frame no problem, so now what? Seems like it would be very easy to permanently damage the thin aluminum interior frame by prying with a screwdriver. Is that just a flat frame or is it a whole window unit? Any idea what type of adhesive might be holding it all in? All I want to do is replace the clear plastic with new. I want to maintain the existing opening shapes, as they are vintage 1960’s. The head port is more of a standard glass port. I could see just replacing that with new at some point.

Trailering My Tartan 64
I have been following this site for a while as I have "Sonsy", a 1967 T27. I bought her in 1972 and sailed the New England coast until moving to Texas. I left her with a friend on the condition that he take care of her and I could sail her when I could get in tiwn. She spent many years on the Maine coast until my friend passed. Last November I picker her up with a trailer and towed her to my home in Texas. It took 3 1/2 days to to tow her back but it went without a problem. A long tow can be done. My pickup had 350k on the clock when I set out to maine with the trailer. I now plan to refurb the boat and teach my grandkids to sail. It will be on a lake, which will be a lot different for me but I just could not let her go after 43 years of ownership. Keep up the comments. I will try to update you on Sonsy's progress. I need to build a new centerboard. I rebuilt the old one several times but it is now beyond repair. I'll replace the through hulls but keep the Atomic 4. Seems to be in fine shape but a little run time may tell more. Thanks Paul
