PTT not activating
I attempted to repair a failed in-line fuse for the ACC port and it appeared to have succeeded, however, the radio now will not respond to the PTT button being pressed on the microphone. The MH-59 microphone illuminates the DTMF LED when the PTT is pressed but no signal is generated. The radio otherwise continues to receive correctly, change frequencies and other settings, etc. I am wondering if I may have damaged something in the area of the in-line fuse that would be affecting the PTT function. Any ideas? 73 Jerry AG7IK

Another buttons issue, and no audio
7
Hi All, - I've read through all the buttons related questions I can find. My issue doesn't quite match any of them - No, it's not locked - Yes, I have cleaned the control head contacts - Yes, I have swapped the control head cable Now that those are out of the way, I have an 857 I just got that supposedly, HF worked and VHF/UHF worked but had low TX power. It's been sitting in a closet for a while. I'm not sure if it's an 857 or an 857D and I'm not clear on how to tell the difference. I've powered it up, and I find that most of the buttons don't work and other than the power up sound and a beep if I use power or the mic FST button, there's no sound. Short press on power or press of mic FST both get the running man and fast tune (and the associated beep). The knob works. The radio powers up in 40m and I can scroll up and down the band. I'd expect to get at least some static sound. That's all I can do. No amount of button fondling causes anything else to happen. I've seen the discussion about resistor issues on the board near the mic connector. I don't see any damage on visual inspection in that area. I've also tried both with and without the mic connected (an MH-31). No change. I've also tried the power it down, press power to drain caps, short power wires together to fully discharge, etc. No change. * I have attempted factory reset with home pressed on power up. The radio does not reset. I've watched a YT video showing the process and the additional sound that is heard on a reset does not occur. On a related note, my display looks a little different in content than the video I watched (https://youtu.be/E8zh_kjHrz0). Mine shows power supply voltage, the s-meter at left is showing full scale S9++ and shows MTUNE, in case any of that is relevant. Nothing else is connected to the radio beyond power and the mic. Ideas? Thanks! Steve, KF8KI

Apologies if this comes through twice. Originally sent by email and it still hasn't appeared after 3 hours, so trying the web interface. How to assemble a Collins filter + Board for FT-857 and save $$$!!!
13
You can buy a "bare" Collins 500hz CW filter for about $100 and solder it yourself to an FT-857 board made by Artur, SP6AB. I got mine for $16. Contact Artur to confirm availability. Collins CW filters are showing up overseas. But you must search and carefully check out the vendor. Collins SSB filters are also available. I hope this helps someone save some money. I did this and I'm happy. --73, Howard, W6ZZ Here is the search term for a Collins 500hz CW "bare" filter: AOR MF-500 500Hz MF Series Collins Mechanical Filter 526-8693-010 73, Howard, W6ZZ

MC-50 microphone to FT857 RJ-45 adapter?
3
I'm looking to replace the stock handheld mic on my FT-857D with a Kenwood MC-50 desktop mic. Does anyone have instructions or plans or schematic for wiring? I have 4 pin and RJ-45 connectors. Has anyone had any luck with this setup, and is audio quality affected? Carl N4LPD

FT 857d clicking noise
10
I just got an 857d and am getting to know it. One thing I have noticed is a click type noise on CW receive when you are tuned on frequency and the green receive light changes to blue. I understand the light changing to blue is to show you that you are in the centre of the passband and are on received frequency. This is a good indicator but I get this click noise that follows the CW when the light switches to blue. It's this normal for these rigs? Thanks 73 Don ve3ids

FT-857/897 with ALE
Because Automatic Link Enable scans multiple frequencies, these are not ideal radios because of the wear and tear on the PA filter relays To prevent this you can configure your scan groups into segments so you can scan at lease some of of the channels some of the time The bands are as follows 0.1Mhz - 1.8 MHz 1.8 MHz - 3.4 MHz 3.4 MHz – 6.9 MHz 6.9 MHz – 13.9 MHz 13.9 MHz – 20.9 MHz 20.9 MHz – 33 MHz 73 Steve VE5SR

Low power output (<1W) on 40,80 & 160M only.
21
Has anyone run into this before? My 857D has very low power output on 40,80 & 160M only. The radio draws very little current on the bands with the problem 100W on other bands. Rx okay on all bands Did a full reset Did the relay clean procedure I can't find any path in the relay switching that only includes those bands.

The rest 10 or 14 Mgx I'm using the same power supply I was using few weeks ago. Could it be the antenna? It's a Chameleon Vertical HF good till 350watts Stef VA2XMP

857D Repairs in the UK

#Repair
Hello My beloved Yaesu 857D has stopped working. It receives fine but has stopped transmitting. I would love to get the oscilloscope and troubleshoot but I became tetraplegic about 15 years ago. Can anyone recommend a UK-based repair engineer? Many thanks Mike 2E0UMF Wigan UK

Reset issues
I am not sure if this is a related issue, BUT, I installed a full time battery conditioner on my Ram 1500 and started having problems with radio functions I believe this may be caused by the battery desulfator function, a combination of short duration pulses at different rates depending on manufacturer. My system is through an A relay but I would recommend powering off the charger before turning on ignition. The device may not be the problem but it is suggested as a caution 73 Steve VE5SR

857D VFO encoder source ?

I know these are available online. I found a fellow who has a lot of them and they're not very expensive. I don't have the URL but you should be able to find them with a search engine. Kevin K7IWW

One display digit stuck
4
Kent my good man, you are both "right" and a genius. Yes I have the MH-59 Vertex Standard all-everything mic. Unplugging/replugging the mic didn't do anything, so I looked at all the mic buttons, and just started pushing them to see what happened. I'd never really engaged with the mic options before. Things happened, or not. Finally, at the bottom of the button field, there is one in plastic orange labeled FAST -- and that was the culprit. Cycling it changed the tuning and I was able to get it back to reality. Now I have lots of reading to do that I hadn't expected. Never a dull moment. Thanks so much for your expertise and your most helpful response. Charlie ==================

Factory head cable

Is the factory head control cable a straght-through RJ6 modular? The radio I bought came with the extended cable but not the small one to connect the head while attached to the body.

FW: [FT-857] One display digit stuck
2
The VFO dial in the settings is probably set up to change the 100 HZ frequencies, you will need to get into the menu settings and change it from the 100 Hz setting to the 10 setting. Or, you have it set on fast VFO freq changes instead of slow. Also, see page 39 in the ops manual “Changing the Dial Speed” Regards, Tony VA7TF VE7ACF From: Charlie Fellenbaum - WB4FAW Sent: March 15, 2024 12:29 PM To: FT-857@groups.io Subject: [FT-857] One display digit stuck I have a different primary rig, but often dig my 857 out of it's storage box under my desk to play with it, learn it, and plan how to use it better. When I put it away some months ago, everything was Fine. But when I hooked it up yesterday to test with an ATAS, it wasn't as Fine as it was before the last nap. I soon noticed that the last digit of the frequency display was stuck on "7". So, when I spin the dial like this: 14 . 300 . 17 all digits move as directed except for the trailing 7. This means I cannot got directly on frequency, ever, and often SSB voices are just a bit more donald duck than they should be. Maddening. I tried changing Menu 82 SSB step to change the tuning steps, but no real help here. Suggestions welcomed, please. I will send it to repair if I have to, but would like one shot at fixing it myself. I'm not a competent tech, but can probably work through easy stuff. ================== 73, Charlie WB4FAW Colorado -- +++++++++++++++ Tony VA7TF VE7ACF

What do you use for dual-band mobile? I'm in the market...
18
I know I'm skewing a bit off topic, but I'd appreciate input from my few fellow Yaesu fans. I want a simple dual band mobile radio for the car. I'd prefer to stick with Yaesu to minimize learning curve, but open to other ideas. Budget is limited. Sub 500 max, preferably sub 400. I'd prefer a true dual band, compatible with APRS / GPS or easily enabled with add ons, compact size, readable screen. Cross band repeat = bonus. I currently have a Yaesu 857 (shack, go kit) and 817 (as backup). I have a Surface Go tablet that could be mounted in car, and a Digirig, and my cable would work with FT8800/8900. New radios - FT300 (does it all, dual band, GPS TxRx, BT, crossband) ~$475 shipped - FT200 (not truly dual band, no GPS Tx w/o dongle?) ~$375 shipped - price is the only appeal here Used radios - FT8800 (enable digital modes via Digirig + tablet) ~ $300-400 - I like the clear and simple display and positive reviews - Another 817 or 857 (+Digirig+tablet) - getting hard to find either for <$650-750, but I could keep looking for a deal - Jump ship and look for a kenwood D710 or similar for ~ $400 - Just use my 817 as mobile and rig it so it can be easily removed from the car What appeals to you? What do you run? Thanks for your time. 73
