The Metro 2 repeater has (mostly) been repaired. The power supply had failed, and the RX had become slightly de-tuned (by 900 Hz). The duplexer was fine all along, and I took it with me. So I will pick up the repaired unit tomorrow (Tuesday), and I will find out if they made the programming tweaks I asked for (hang time increase, CW ID change). Apparently, the PSU in the Kenwood TKR-850 is not very reliable. If the Metro 16 repeater fails, that would be the first thing to check. Now we just need to determine what will happen with the site. Will Metro 16 remain at Moos, or will Metro 2 be swapped back? I suspect that Metro 16 has accidentally been set to low power. This is controlled by a small unmarked push-button on the lower corner of the front panel that could easily have been pressed during handling. Low power is 25w, high is 40w. Ian, Richard, and myself just met a UMN safety representative to discuss what sorts of safety mechanisms we need to use during our repair - specifically whether we need to use fall protection. Because the only thing we need to do within 15 feet of an unprotected fall is untie a knot, we don't need harnesses. Ian and I will write a full repair procedure document, and after it's received by our safety contact, we're good to continue with our repair.

For those who don't, there is a whole series of electronics videos by Alan Wolke (W2AEW) that take technical topics in bite sized chunks and make them easy to understand. Many are oriented towards ham radio. I've seen a lot of attempts at education over the years and these are some of the best. Howdy club Is there anybody available today with key card access to Moose tower that I could go up with to swap out metro to which seems to be having receiver problems for a new GMRS Repeater named Metro 16? Metro 16 is on 462.575 with a strange PL tone but behaves much better than metro to ever did. Metro 16 has a hang on it so you can tell whether or not you hit the Repeater. I have been testing metro 16 at my house on a low antenna and it seems to be doing very well. Just a reminder, but if anyone is planning on using the LiFePo battery in the hamshack for Field Day activities, it should be charged first. Use the charger inside the case and give it about six hours. It's a 40Ah battery and it should last eight hours at 100W with a typical duty cycle.
