Wandel & Goltermann DA-30C software.. 6
Sorry for this very off-topic question, but I kind of hope that the people here, connoisseurs of great equipment, might also know about this device as there is no real active group for W&G apparently... I got this Wandel & Goltermann DA-30C from Ebay for almost nothing. I have used that device when I was young, it was one of the most expensive devices my company bought at that time. I used it for Ethernet debugging and to discover how some specific hardware worked so that I could write software to use it. I managed to get the DA-30C to run again (it needed but a simple repair, the crystal resonator on the CPU board had died). But sadly enough the harddisk was toast too, and nothing I do convinces it to reveal its secrets.. Is there anyone that has this device still running that could make a disk image, or someone that would know where to get the software? Friendly regards, Frits

HP8591E - SPEC AN - OPTIONS 3
Good day all. I recently obtained one of these analysers in great condition at a great price. It has no options at all fitted. Now i wouldnt mind adding what i can, if at all possible again at a reasonable price! Firstly does anyone know if option 101 (Fast Time domain sweeps) can be obtained by just fitting the ADC Board, or does firmwhere need changing and anything else? Secondly, has anyone got any of the Product notes relating to any of the options? Thirdly, has anyone got any option parts for sale? If it helps im UK based. Thanks in advance , Kind regards Pete H.

[HP8753D] Remotely obtaining names of saved calibrations/states from the device 5
Hi all, I am currently working towards automating some of the measurements using Python and HP8753D (firmware 6.12). I've encountered a problem finding a proper way to get a list of saved states. My goal is to load a specific state, run some measurements, and then load different calibrations for other tests. I am using a GPIB-USB adapter from NI for communication. I figured out that I can load states by calling the RECAREG[D] command with a specific number, but I have not been able to obtain a list of names associated with the states. I tried using the COPYFRRT command, but either I don't understand how it works (most likely) or it does something different. My second question: Is there a possibility of remotely reading all the data presented on the screen? I was thinking that I could execute the KEY17 command (for Save/Recall), but I have not been able to figure out which command is responsible for dumping the screen view (if there is one...).

HP 6253A PS repair 7
Hi all, Another project on my bench is a bit of a headscratcher. This 6253A is overall functional, but it won't adjust over about 12V without the protection kicking in and removing the output. To bring the output up again, it needs to be dialed down to a zero output, and adjusting up restarts the cycle. When this protection mode gets triggered, the output amps go high (about 3.75A), so it looks like some sort of load on the outputs occurs and that's what's causing the output to get shutdown. If I thinker with the CC adjustments, all I can trigger is a mode where the unit would go in a cyclic loop of protection/reset and the A meter would cycle up and down as the unit cycles through that. Maybe more interestingly, the behavior is almost identical between the two (L/R) supplies. So this suggests the issue is occurring in the common/shared circuits between the two internal supplies. I need to dive deeper and decipher which of the modules are separate and which shared, as the manual (at least the one I have) is pretty generically written and seems to apply pretty similarly to single and dual PSs from the time. I enclose my handwritten measurements per Table 5-3 at p.5-11 (https://groups.io/g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment/album?id=296514), but I don't see any smoking guns in there. Thank you for your input on this. Radu.

Help with 3314A troubleshooting--Fan runs, no display. 7
Have a 3314A on the bench that I am trying to bring back to life. Powers up, fan runs, but none of the displays or annunciators light up. Not even a brief blink at startup. A quick check of the power supply rails found +/15V OK, +5V was around 1.6V. The 470 uF output filter cap (C105) on the +5V rail was open (read 8 nF). Replacing it restored the +5V, so now the power supply is apparently functioning OK. Because of the 1 bad electrolytic, I will plan to completely replace all the electrolytics in the unit. The lithium CMOS battery was also stone dead, and beginning to leak. Clipped it out. But restoring the power supply rail has failed to bring back any display or other sign of operation. A few quick checks with a scope show that the 2 1MHz clocks are running OK, and probing random pins of the CPU and memory shows bus activity. The LED on the controller board comes on at power up, blinks a couple times as I hear a few reed relays somewhere clicking, then then goes out. It would seem the the CPU is booting and executing code, at least up to a point. Tack soldered in a 3V coin cell in place of the dead CMOS battery, no difference. The power supply rails are making it to the front panel/display board. This is apparently a later production unit (1987/1988 date codes on most parts, with only 2 ROMS on it, rather than 6.) The 2 ROMS (U206 and 207) look like they have been replaced, as the sockets appear to have been soldered in by hand, and the chips (27256 EPROMS) do not have HP labels/part numbers on them, just handwritten ones saying U206 and U207. The service manual troubleshooting charts and the various self tests you can initiate using the DIP switch all presume that you have a signature analyzer available, which I do not. Does anyone have any suggestions how to proceed from here? Any place I can get the files for the ROMs, so I can compare to what is on mine? Only seem to find the files for the 6 chip mask ROM version of the board. Thanks, and appreciate the input... 73, Bob Weiss N2IXK

HP 6200B PS - power on ("indicator map") light replacement 8
Hi all, I have one of these on the bench and everything seems to be working OK, except for the power light. Typically, HP manuals would cover replacing this very well, but not this one manual. This is a neon lamp (Sloan part# 858-R), though I'm considering connecting it to one of the DC rails and making it an LED, of course. I've tried prodding the black tab at the end of the light module, to no avail. The module was obviously pushed in against the copper tab that bent as the module was inserted and now secures it in place. I tried to bend the tips of those leafs to see if the thing would come out, but not easily, and I don't think pushing it out throogh the front would improve access to anything. Has anyone done this recently and/or recalls how they proceeded? Pics can be seen at https://groups.io/g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment/album?id=296512. Thank you, Radu.

HP8563E Spectrum analyser-Error 566. 2
The HP8563E I've been working on has the following errors on screen in quick succession: Error 462 Ampl Unable to adjust second step Gain stage. Error 456 Ampl Unable to adjust fine attenuator of the step gain amplifiers. Error 462 Ampl Unable to adjust second step Gain stage. Error 467 Log Ampl Unable to adjust step gain amplifiers. Error 456 Ampl As above. Error 565 Log Ampl Unable to adjust amplitude of log scale. Which settles to Error 566 Log Ampl Unable to adjust amplitude of log scale. I fitted a NewScope6 VGA screen a while ago and initially these errors did not appear. They seem to have developed more recently. Also, the instrument's case is open, so it does not reach as warm a temperature as it would when fully buttoned up with its case closed. Could this contribute to any such error messages appearing? I've had a look at the A4 schematic and there was mention elsewhere of a possible problem with U501 and U502 in the Log Amp section of the A4 assembly and U201 in the Lin Gains section. These chips are CA3127 transistor arrays. Before I leap to conclusions, are there any quick ways of narrowing the problem down to this section from the front panel. The screen output consists of a line in the middle of the screen with some noise on it. Feeding the 300MHz ref into the input shows the peak, but the amplitude is all wrong. Can anyone help? Thanks. P.S I'm going to check that the SMB connectors are attached properly as well. I will put some relevant info into the files directory if needed. Is this the only way to upload files?

HP8566B 20/30 section output 10
Hi all, Still tackling the YTO Unlock error on my SA. I've found that regardless of whatever centre frequency is selected - anywhere from 50Mhz to 21Ghz - the output of the 20/30 synthesizer section remains at 26.8Mhz. Could that be the source of the problem itself or just a symptom of a problem elsewhere? Thanks, J. PS - I used a smb tee inserted for this purpose so as not to break any loops.

HP 8563E - CRT turns on only after waiting for a while turned off 8
Hi all Among my recent purchases, I recently got a 8563E which I believed was functioning. It powered on when I first got it and all good except several of the buttons didn't work. I cleaned those and I thought it was a good idea to recap the power supply as you do. Long story short, the +5V and +15V seemed to be severely loaded and didn't come up correctly and I had to place the old electrolytics back on those rails to fix the problem with the rails (new caps with too low ESR?) My new problem that I may have created for myself (maybe it was like this from the beginning, I'm not sure) is that when the 8563E has been turned off for a while (20min+ or so) it turns on correctly, but if I turn it off and on again either after a few seconds or even few minutes, nothing appears on the CRT. The +5, +15, -15V rails measures correctly. The 110V on the CRT supply is only at 34V. I don't have much experience when it comes to CRT power supplies so I would appreciate any advise. My guess at the moment is a faulty high voltage multiplier/transformer or A17 display driver board shown below since when I disconnect the 3x -2.45kV wires going to the CRT driver, the 110V come back up (but CRT still off) but I don't know which. HP free e-book 20
A new edition of the e-book "The Great HP" has been released and can be freely downloaded from my page www.k100.biz. I removed the Advantest R3132 (now in a separate ebook) and added various instruments. It has now more than 1,000 pages. To make easier the download, I split the file in three parts which can be downloaded separately. Tell me if you have problems - any suggestion welcome.

E4411B forgotten its option(s) 8
I have a HP branded E4411B, if I press system-more-shiw system it correctly identifies the following options 1DR 049 B72 If I then press system-more-more-licensing-show License then there's nothing there. I can confirm the color screen (option 049) is working, but the narrow bandwidth (1DR) isn't, its still pegged at 1khz (@1MHz span). I tried re-entering the license code for 1DR, and it said it was activated, and it then appeared in the show license screen... but still didn't actually work. I'm thinking I might have to reinstall the firmware, re-enter the license codes and see if that works. Unless there's something else I can try? Ben

HP8566B Troubleshooting and Repair Manual Error? 2
Hi, On page 5 of the Analog Troubleshooting part of the RF section, it explains how the start frequency is derived and provides an example for a start frequency of 2Ghz. Unfortunately, the figures shown don't tally with those provided a few pages later in Table 2 headed "M and N numbers and resulting frequencies." In the worked example for a 2Ghz start, they show (among other figures) B=1, N=13 and an M/N frequency of 180.769231 Mhz. The Table, on the other hand, shows that for a 2Ghz start frequency, N=11 and M/N=184.545455 Mhz. According to the same table, in order to generate the M/N frequency 180.769231, you'd need a start frequency of 2.320Ghz. Now these figures are repeated in different versions of the manual, so I'm wondering if it is an error or whether I'm making some error myself in interpreting these figures! Could some kind soul please confirm who's in the wrong here (I have an uncomfortable feeling it's probably me!) Thanks, J.

Did HP ever offer a switch box for the 141T Aux A port? 2
I’m sure at the time it was a particularly rare circumstance (given the price) that someone who purchased a 141T mainframe would proceed to purchase the complete gamut of 855# spectrum analyzer plugins and 844# accessory modules… now that these machines are relatively affordable on the used market, I’ve managed to “collect ‘em all” in a very heavy game of boat anchor Pokémon. I’ve currently got the entire lot rack mounted, however, a glaring issue has emerged: Both the 8444 and 8443 tracking generators use the same “Aux A” coaxial D-Sub port on the 141T. While it’s not impossible to crawl behind the rack to swap cables when I need to use one or the other, it’s a very inconvenient ordeal nonetheless. Did HP ever offer a splitter/switch-box device for those that own & use both tracking generators frequently? If not, could one be made?

Conductive Paint for Microcircuit Repair... 59
Hi Gang, I need a workable conductive paint for use on repairing a really tiny flexible circuit board trace. Due to a flaw in manufacturing, a small bit (about the diameter of a human hair) of a conductive trace is once again missing. About 10 years ago, I fixed the problem with a conductive silver paint, and a brush made from one of my arm hairs. The whole operation was right at the limits of my abilities to manipulate things by hand. Now, it is 10 years later... The first time, I was vexed by the quickness with which the paint's solvent evaporated, and skinned over. I got the job done before, but it looked like a clotted mess. What I would like is a one part conductive paint that flows, and works like water or ink, but has a working time of 30 seconds, or so... while making a hair thick trace... which isn't quite the same thing as making a 1/16th in brush stroke... Conductive thermosetting epoxies look promising, but I don't know how they were meant to be applied, or what working with them is like. The board is orange, like kapton (polyamide), but I don't really know what its temperature limits are. The trace is exactly the same width as one of my descended from northern European diaspora arm hairs... about 0.04mm. Ideas? -Chuck Harris

HP 8557A Start-Up Calibration & Linear Mode - Errors in Manual? 6
Hey y'all! I was hoping to get some help or clarification on the start-up calibration procedure for the HP 8557A/8558B spectrum analyzer plug-in. First, I did not get this unit in working order and I have completed a lot of restoration on it. Also, I've never used/owned a spectrum analyzer before this unit, which likely contributes to the trouble I'm having. The problem I'm having is with the linear/10 dB/div calibration. In this step, the manual states that you should be able to adjust both the Linear and 10dB/div by adjusting the 'Reference Level Fine' knob to get the 250MHz calibration signal peak all the way to the top graticule line. But I can't do that without adjusting the 'Coarse reference level' knob (the manual does allude to using the coarse reference level knob for this adjustment in the troubleshooting section of the manual). The manual states if this adjustment cannot be done, then check the linear/log amplifier board A11, but I can't find any issues there. My question is, can anyone who owns one of these make sense of the manual? Or possibly have they confirmed an issue with the way it is described? It seems a blog on repairing this instrument (pretty much the same repair I had to perform) also seems to allude to issues with the manual. My cal signal and amplitude for both linear and log modes looks similar to his (blog link here; scroll to the bottom https://lazyelectrons.wordpress.com/2019/01/22/hewlett-packard-180d-8558b-spectrum-analyzer-repair-hp-180d-hp-8558b/) Thanks in advance for your help! -Frank

How to remove the output cable of the isolator in the 8672A 11
I need to check the level coming from the isolator but the cable connecting its output to the low pass filter is very difficult to disconnect. There is very little space around the SMA connectors. The alternative is to disassemble the housing but for just checking the output level it's a huge amount of work Is there someone in this group that can advise how best to get access to the either the output of the isolator or to the output of the low pass filter connected to the isolator output?
