Fun With Packaging, Track Department
8
Well, this is likely to be the least important thing you'll see today... Atlas track has been packaged in several different ways, including during the A1G time period. A version I either haven't seen or haven't seen in a long time recently appeared on eBay. It was conveniently offered with a more common version of packaging. Note the racing car with the Atlas trademark! This harkens back to the days when Atlas made a short-lived foray into slot cars. Only the HO Scale "Refreshment Stand" remains from that product line. Here's the image-- no affiliation with the seller. Cheers, George (your list-owner)

History of Atlas N Advertising #1 - July 1967
4
Group, I've been very, very slowly making my way through the back issues of Model Railroader (starting with the first issue-- I have the "75 Years" DVD and Railroad Model Craftsman (from January 1968) making note of the various N Scale features and advertising. Keeping to the topic of this group, here is the modest but very first mention of A1G in an Atlas advertisement, from July 1967. The main subject of this ad is HO Scale track, but down in the right hand corner, what do we have... Coming Soon, Watch for Atlas "N Gauge" Model Railroading, with a photo of a steam locomotive. Just a hint of what's to come... Now, let's see if I can keep the post numbering consecutive... Cheers, George (your list owner)

AIG Pacific - Soft Drivers
10
Greetings all! I have an Atlas 1G Pacific I am attempting to resurrect. Upon disassembly, I notice the drivers are made of a dark gray material and are rather "soft". They are so soft I fear they will not stay in gauge once the unit is reassembled. Can anyone shed any light on this matter? Are they supposed to be soft like this . . . if not, is there a cure? I know this is a long shot, but are there replacement drivers available or does anyone have a set of drivers they would sell or "loan"? Thanks in advance. Dan

A1G Building Kits
10
This was always one of my favorite kits to add to what ever layout I was building at the time. Though you had to allow enough real estate as the kit had one very large foot print.

My its been a while...
14
Hi George and the gang Well my fondness for N scale and all those little things I grew up with hasn't waned. But the prospects of a collection no longer seen and even less likely a layout of any description, now that I'm an unofficial pensioner too, means inevitably I must resign my spectator post on this and other groups. I notice many fade away and it's been a long time since the heyday of Y** groups. I lost a dear friend back in 2017 and with him, his massive layout on which I spent many enjoyable hours for exactly 10 years, (I was also living there looking after his beloved cats! quite often)- doing scenery (it was a typical plywood central in 2007) and ribbing his 'traditional' outlook on terrain (ie British) and exotic mixture of fantasies (US/ British/ Japanese! and a few 'proxy' New Zealand models) of running collections. He sold and parted up the layout prior to his unfortunate last days to save his families burden. So in a week or so I'll sign out, and George I'll be in touch separately about UMTRR, but thanks all for the entertainment, regards davew

Atlas Factory Building
I am using my Atlas a1g factory building as the briquette plant in my steel mill. Even a building kit that is over fifty years old can be used somewhere on a layout. Ira

Future of This Group
I've been reading the comments on the topic of whether to keep this group running or not. We don't exactly have a statistically valid sample, even out of the 58 members that are currently enrolled and not "bouncing" (another 18 e-mails are "bouncing"), but out of the people that did respond there were more requests to keep it going than to shut it down. Let me respond to (I hope) each comment on the thread: First, Facebook already has plenty of N Scale-oriented groups. One in particular is called "N Scale Hi-Rail" which covers A1G and other material from roughly the 1960s to the 1990s. I belong to it and post to it; at this writing there are over 450 members: https://www.facebook.com/groups/543086996404531 So I don't see the need for another group there. Further, my view of Facebook is ambivalent at best. I very carefully manage my presence there and have no less than seven add-ons to my browser to attempt to keep its intrusive tracking, beaconing, cookie-ing, and especially its advertising, off my PC. I'm not going to get into any other "features" it has because that makes my trains nervous. And don't get me started about "the algorithm." Second, I don't intend to expand the group beyond A1G. But A1G is more than just the rolling stock-- anything before, say, 1980, with the Atlas brand is fair game and that includes buildings, track and accessories. Third, the amount of time I need to spend on this group is close to zero, and I have Doug as a co-moderator, so that's not an issue. What is an issue is how this group is simply not being used. If you want to keep the group going... then, keep it going... post something, start a topic, etc. Don't depend on me to do it. I'm locking this topic after posting my response so that we can have discussion about A1G, not about this post. Fourth, my own participation in A1G has dropped off because the A1G website could be considered basically complete at this point. As much as I would like to add to it by posting the "Life After A1G" rolling stock, that is, cars produced with the same tooling and marketed under other brands (Roco, ER Models, Walthers) my own set of multiple competing priorities gets in the way. I haven't announced anything new posted to the site because there hasn't been anything posted to the site. What I have been most interested lately, A1G-wise is the "vintage advertising" in Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman. So where does that leave us? With a rather lukewarm "stay of execution" for this group. I would not outright delete it anyway since there are files and past posts but I would determine how to "close" it. No action on my part is needed to keep it open, so for now, we'll keep it open. If we go through another few months without any activity, though, what would be the point? By the way, the activity that most typically happens when a note like this is sent... is that people leave the group. Cheers, George (Your continuing list-owner)

Tank Car Blog including a Vinegar Car Prototype
From "another network" I have a citation to a page in the "Industrial History Blog" which discusses some random information about tank cars in general... https://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/2018/01/tank-car-history.html More importantly, there's a photo of Standard Brands vinegar tank car SBIX 1641. If you'd like to go to that photo directly, here's a URL: https://tinyurl.com/ezfeff9a As we've noted before here and elsewhere, this car isn't a match for the A1G model but it is an illustration of what the real Standard Brands tank cars looked like. George (your list owner) (still looking for that later production Atlas Heinz 57 vinegar car)

Mystery Heinz 57 Vinegar Car?
26
I have a mysterious Heinz 57 Vinegar car.. Yellow tank with. Blue "57" but larger than the Atlas Car. Blue "Heinz Vinegars" (also larger than the Atlac car. Brown Flat with white Text "H.J. Heinz Co. 203" No small print 'Dim Data' It appears to be pad printed, So I dont think it was custom. Its not close enough to the Atlas or E&C cars to be a variation. And it does not seem detailed enough to be an NSE/NCS release.. Does anyone know the origin of this version? Email me for a pic (last time I tried attaching a photo it didnt seem to work.) ~Ian

New Photos of 3120 Series 'Big Pig Palace' Stock Cars on A1G Site
3
Gang, I've reshot the photos for the four 'Hi-Cube" Stock Cars, the A1G 3120 Series and posted them on the appropriate page. The old images, actually scans (!) were a mere 19 years old. I'm still mystified as to why I can't post the direct link and have it send you right to that page. (It looks like the same HTML as I use for the UMTRR and Irwin's Journal Online pages, where it does work. Insert "banghead" here.) So you'll need to access the page and the new photos from the main page drop-down menu in the upper frame or the table in the lower frame. http://www.irwinsjournal.com/a1g I've added a little bit of prototype information as well. Cheers, George (your list-owner)

Helper Service: Need Hi-Res Photo of 1967 Catalog Cover
8
Hi gang, I'm preparing an article on A1G for The N Scale Enthusiast Magazine. A milestone in A1G history is the 1967 Catalog, which has on the cover the iconic painting of two trains crossing over each other in a mountain scene. I'd like to include a photo of that cover but given my several moves I can't find it. I'm wondering if anyone has handy that catalog and can furnish me a hi-res photo of that cover. I need a higher quality than for a website, posting here, etc. since it will be in a physical magazine. A high-quality cellphone picture or of course a photo taken with a digital camera would work. The image needs to be as "straight" as possible for use. I will give you a credit in the article! Thanks in advance. --George, your list-owner

July 1967...
On Page 71, also the inside back cover of the July 1967 Model Railroader... check the bottom right hand corner. It's the milestone I've been looking for! It was previously mentioned in the "Trade Topics" column in April and June 1967 that Atlas was planning to introduce a line of N "Gauge", but this is the first Atlas advertisement that mentions it. Interestingly, the "At The Throttle" editorial in that same July 1967 MR cautions that we should refer to N "Scale" not N "Gauge" because there was already HOn2 1/2, or HO Scale trains running on N Scale track.
