ISO Recommendations for dinner and live music 2
Hello, I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a restaurant in town that also has live music? But with music and you can still speak to your dining partners! Jazz would be great but not that discriminating. Matt 3601 Connecticut dcguy202 @ yahoo dot com

More questions Re: ISO Info on Wilson Pool Locker Rooms & Less Busy Times 2
A few more questions: can’t find reliable info online. Does the lane configuration change on different days as in the past and if so, which days are 25 meter and which are 50 meter? Is the whirlpool open? What are the times when the leisure pool is used for classes and not available for lap swimming? Linda Connecticut Ave. - previous message - I recall a number of posts prior to the pool closing concerned about the safety, or lack thereof, in the locker rooms. Has there been an improvement in this area with the reopening? I didn't take my phone previously, but my understanding is the check-in process now requires a digital card. Previously my driver's license sufficed for admittance. Also, I'm looking for information about less busy times of the day to do laps. Does anyone have feedback on this? Unfortunately, Google hasn't been able to provide trends for less busy times. I'm just starting to swim again and don't want to impede those who would be faster than me.

Talea, new CP restaurant, is excellent 27
Talea is a new Italian restaurant that took the place of Cafe Deluxe on Wisconsin Ave. I had lunch there today and can report it was excellent. Every single dish we ordered was delicious and in great proportions, lovely ambiance, and excellent service. Worth a try, for sure! Laine Shakerdge P.S. I have no personal connection to the restaurant; just like to promote great quality local businesses.

What a week it has been and it's only Wednesday! (was: Re: Mural on the corner of Connecticut and Ordway) 2
Dear Neighbors and friends, What a week it has been so far. Countless suggestions for public art, murals to be exact, on every corner, on any number of subjects from the sublime to the ridiculous. Many have suggested a possible art work, or subject, or artist, hoping to end the debate or to bring peace to the dispute, or for a pat on the head. Instead they get their feet kicked out from under them by all the rest of us. Add to this the Republican Party’s National Convention and all the chaos that its standard bearer usually brings with him and you have a lot of excitement, gun shots, spattered blood, bandaged ears…and it's only Wednesday. Well I have a suggestion that will bring us all back down to earth, back home to Cleveland Park, all together, to Ground Zero to be exact, to the northeast corner of Connecticut and Ordway, where the long suffering, now debunked “Service Lane” used to cross the sidewalk … and I don’t need a pat on the head. I already know what a great idea this is! What makes almost every European small town or grand metropolis so charming? Its public art! There are fountains and statues, benches and figures of every form and function. The Germans even call it a Denkmal, a "Thought provoker”. How appropriate for the land of Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and Karl Marx! Therefore I propose a slightly larger than life-size “thought provoker.” Have you ever noticed that your porch furniture is slightly larger than your dining room furniture? It is! I propose a slightly larger than life-size statue of our namesake, Grover Cleveland, standing on the pavement at our level. He can be standing there in a top hat and morning coat as if he were just coming back from an early stroll with his lovely young wife, Frankie. With one hand held close to his vest as men did in those days. Children can be told to slightly rub the president's hand for good luck on their final exams. The other hand would be held high holding a Baby Ruth candy bar. Yes, he and Frankie had just had a baby daughter whom they named Ruth. The entire country was so besotted with this guy who married in the White House and not too long afterwards had this little baby daughter, whom they named Ruth. The entire country fell in love with baby Ruth. A candy company was about to bring out a new candy bar which they called “Baby Ruth.” It is with us to this day. Where to get the bronze? We could have scrap drives to remind our grandchildren what we did in the days before cell phones when there were wars to fight, big, nasty wars that involved the whole world. Just a suggestion. Eleanor 🌸 O. PS: My middle name is Ruth.

Mural on the corner of Connecticut and Ordway! (was: ANC3C July 2024 NOTICE & DRAFT Agenda *UPDATED 7/13/2024*) 42
From Message #215712 : "Mural on the 7-Eleven building (3433 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008). Render 1 here. Render 2 here. *UPDATED 7/13/2024*" The ANC will vote on supporting a grant by the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities for a mural to be painted on the corner of Connecticut and Ordway, on the building housing the 711. Please look at the rendering above (from the announcement of the meeting tomorrow) I think this is a terrible idea for several reasons. First, the building is lovely as is (for a 711) the sandstone facade is original and part of the assembly of buildings recognized by the Art Deco Society. Second, art is a very personal matter: what is lovely to one person can be a horror to another. The proposed mural is large, and from the rendering, striking. In this case, everyone waiting to cross Connecticut at the light will be forced to endure the visual punch. A treatise could be written on what makes a successful mural, but this is no Diego Rivera, or even WPA project. I would be less offended if it was painted on the Ordway side only, or on the side wall of the Uptown theatre. There is the lovely, and iconic, mural on Connecticut Ave and Calvert, and I would argue that it is successful because relatively understated, a single coherent image. Third, and a corollary to the above, for a project of this scale and impact, residents (and not just CP residents) should be given every opportunity to participate, and a decision cannot be rushed in a single dog-days-of-summer ANC session. If a mural is a good idea, perhaps we should solicit other artists' designs? I hope the people reading this posting will take a second to look at the rendering and opine. I believe the ANC commissioner for this area does not read this listserve, so if anyone shares my opinion on the mural and its location, they will have to contact him directly. His contact email is 3C05@... [3C05 @ anc.dc.gov]. If the vote goes through on Monday's meeting, our next step will be to appeal directly to the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities. How about "Quiet Hours" for restaurants? (was: Talea, new CP restaurant, is excellent) 11
This is taking the discussion on a tangent, but after reading Eleanor O. I wonder: does anyone else think quiet hours in a restaurant might become a marketable concept? I just returned from San Diego, where the conversation indoors and outdoors on the patio of a restaurant in Little Italy (I recommend Monello if you're going there!) was so low and pleasant that I remarked on it to my dining companion. He was surprised to learn that we had an app to monitor volume in restaurants. I wonder if having the equivalent of a "quiet car" in a train would be possible. I too have declined returning to restaurants if I have to raise my voice and shout instead of speak with others. Kirsten Keppel --- The referenced message is Message #215814
