How about "Quiet Hours" for restaurants?
4
Dear Neighbors and Friends, Restaurants should always be quiet. You are not dining alone. You are sharing a space with strangers. If your parents did their job, they would have taught you not to disturb other people—ever. If you want to shriek with laughter, shout across the table, stand up and wave to someone just coming in, stay home! I hated eating out when I was a kid. I only remember doing so on Mothers’ Day. I had to sit still! Be quiet! Not squirm or wiggle my chair! Not complain about the food—and it was usually awful! My mother’s cooking was much better. She only cooked what we liked. She didn’t waste time or money on garnishes. Which I thought I had to eat because I had to “clean my plate.” McDonalds, Burger King, and other family “restaurants” don’t count! They are for the family, behave as badly as you wish. “Restaurant” is a misnomer. Eleanor 🌸 - from previous message - I wonder: does anyone else think quiet hours in a restaurant might become a marketable concept? I just returned from San Diego, where the conversation indoors and outdoors on the patio of a restaurant in Little Italy (I recommend Monello if you're going there!) was so low and pleasant that I remarked on it to my dining companion. He was surprised to learn that we had an app to monitor volume in restaurants. I wonder if having the equivalent of a "quiet car" in a train would be possible. I too have declined returning to restaurants if I have to raise my voice and shout instead of speak with others. [snip]

Eagle along Mount Vernon Trail
2
This morning, while riding my bike along the Mount Vernon trail, just south of the Memorial Bridge, a jogger stopped me to point out a rare find. This bald eagle was on a low tree branch close to the Potomac, and not bothered by a few bikers and joggers nearby. When I returned to the spot about an hour later, the eagle had moved on. In more than 4 decades of riding this trail, it is my first siting of an eagle. Bill Menczer Woodley Park ---- Editor's note to self (saved for "The Cleveland Park Listies" to be announced in December 2024): Definitely will merit a nomination for the Cleveland Park Listy award for Photo of the Year).

James Baldwin 100th Birthday Celebration at Georgetown Library - Grand Finale 8/1@5:30PM
Please join us in celebrating the remarkable life and enduring legacy of James Baldwin on his 100th Birthday! In honor of this literary giant and social justice advocate, we will be cutting a special birthday cake to commemorate his contributions to literature, civil rights, and the enduring pursuit of justice and equality. We will also welcome a special visitor and speaker Deborah Tulani Salahu-Din, Smithsonian researcher in African American Literary History. Her recent projects at the National Museum of African American History and Culture included Chez Baldwin, a digital exhibition that explores the life and works of writer and activist James A. Baldwin through the lens of his house in the South of France. Her talk “Why Baldwin Matters Today”, will underscore two societal values that help frame Baldwin’s life, work, and that illustrate why his thoughts and messages still matter to the nation and world. Two of these values are freedom and identity. The event is scheduled for August 1st at 5:30PM in the Reading Room of Georgetown Neighborhood Library. We look forward to celebrating James Baldwin's 100th birthday with you! How does Dan Silverman (a/k/a Prince of Petworth) get news of commercial real estate changes before anyone else?

Let me answer that question with another question: When neighbors in Cleveland Park or Woodley Park see a sign on a storefront that says the business is leaving/someone else is moving in, why do they notify Popville first? Why not the Cleveland Park Listserv? Playing catch-up -- and giving credit where it's due to the source -- I give you the story: District Kitchen Abruptly Closed in Woodley Park. However, “in about 30 days a new restaurant will open here…” By Prince Of Petworth Published July 19, 2024 at 1:05PM 2606 Connecticut Ave, NW opened here back in 2012 Thanks to Leah for sending the departing note from District Kitchen [Ed. note: Click on the link below to read the departing note from the owners]: https://www.popville.com/2024/07/district-kitchen-dc-closed/ Let me end with a plea to anyone who spots a sign of change on a door or window in any of the storefronts on the commercial blocks in Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Cathedral Heights, Tenleytown, Van Ness, or Forest Hills -- snap a photo and drop us a note at clevelandpark@groups.io. A Grover Cleveland Statue for Cleveland Park?
Love the idea of Grover Cleveland sitting on a bench. I used to live in Milton, Delaware where a park had the figure of poet John Milton sitting on a bench. He was usually fitted with a proper topper for different seasons. Fun! Bonnie Boyle Côté - previous message - Many posts have recalled statues in different states. I just want to remind neighbors that there are something like 14 wonderful statues at National Harbor, including one of FDR in his wheelchair, one of President Eisenhower in his military uniform, one of Winston Churchill, one of five* military personnel representing five branches of the military (“Team America”) — and even one of Rosie the Riveter. *(We had five military branches before Space Force became our sixth.) I personally love the idea of a Grover Cleveland statue on the Cleveland Park promenade, and if a search is made for an artist, I hope the search committee can visit “Spirit Park” at National Harbor to admire the statues we have there. In fact, with or without a search, I recommend a visit. Fun! - previous message - Dear Friends and Neighbors, Why not expand on [the] idea and have Grover Cleveland sitting on one end of a park bench? Great photo opps for everyone: Zoo traffic. Birthday party guests, local politicians, prom dates, brides & grooms. The groom could bring a top hat as a prop to be photographed in.

Recommended neighborhood restaurant: Makers Union
2
Makers Union, the relatively new restaurant where Matchbox used to be, is offering a great lunch or dinner there for $25/$40 respectively as part of Black Restaurant Week (through 7/28). Full disclosure: My daughter works there. But that means I've eaten there a number of times and have been happy with the food (and, of course, the service)! They also offer family-style options if you want to go with a larger group. And they just got some new, huge umbrellas that provide great coverage for outdoor dining. Check them out and help them stake out a permanent footprint in the neighborhood! Eva Ostrum Cleveland Park Listserv Sponsor

A Grover Cleveland Statue for Cleveland Park? (was: Mural on the corner of Connecticut and Ordway)

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Why not expand on Judy’s idea and have Grover Cleveland sitting on one end of a park bench. Great photo opps for everyone: Zoo traffic. Birthday party guests, local politicians, prom dates, brides & grooms. The groom could bring a top hat as a prop to be photographed in. Eleanor 🌸 Eleanor.qoe@... - previous message - I love Judy's idea about a public sculpture. And DC has plenty of a really good artists who can pull off a good Grover Cleveland. I have traveled extensively in the US and abroad. What I find most interesting about the places I visit are the urban spaces and how they attract people to come, sit, talk, and spend some time, which usually includes spending money. How do they achieve this? Well, the public spaces usually include an interesting sculpture or two by a notable artist, shade trees or shade providing structures (also designed by notable artists or architects), unique seating and occasionally, a fountain or water feature. I see an opportunity here for a thriving commercial space with lots of public interest, especially if there is a notable public art piece and if the Uptown Theater ever reopens. [snip]
